designed as to prevent the ready and easy separation thereof when engaged with each other, while at the same time permitting such separation when they occupy the proper relative positions,'the finding of which will provide amusement and instruction.

To these and other ends my invention consists of the puzzle having certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference designate like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of my puzzle complete. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof, showing the second operation necessary to disengage the parts from each other; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the parts when brought to their last position immediately preceding the separation thereof.

In carrying out my invention I provide two links,which are exactly similar in size, shape, &c., and comprising a hook 1, the end of which terminates in a bar 2, which lies at substantially a right'angle to the body of the hook, and an eye 3, the hook and eye being joined by an intermediate bar 4. The eye 3 is provided so that the links may be readily grasped between the fingers; but it is not essential to the operation of the puzzle, as the device will operate equally as well as if the eye were entirely omitted or if made of any one of the numerousforms and shapes that may be desired.

In Figs. 1 and 2 the links are shown engaged with each other in the relative positions occupied by them before the puzzle is solved.

To solve the puzzle, the link A is grasped between the fingers of one hand and the link B between the fingers of the other hand. The link Bis then turned so as to permit one end of the. bar of the link A to pass through the hook of the link B, at the same time permitting one end of the bar upon the link B to pass through the hook of link A. The relative positions of the links in this position are shown in Fig. 3. The link B is then turned to a position wherein it will be at substantially a right angle to the link A, as shown in Fig. 4.. During the turning of link B to the last-described position the bar of the link A passes completely through the hook of the link B and the bar connected with the hook of link B passes through the hook of link A, thereby disengaging the links. After this second operation the links can be separated by simply drawing them apart.

To again engage the links with each other, the operation above described is reversedz'. 6., the links are first placed in the relative positions shown in Fig. 4, then brought to the position shown in Fig. 3, and, finally, to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cross-section of the links as shown in my drawings is oval; but I do not desire to be limited to this particular form, as any other may be used equally as well.

There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention aside from those herein shown and suggested, and I therefore claim all modifications and alterations as are within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a puzzle, the combination of two links, each of which is provided on one end with a hook terminating in a bar wider than the body of said hook, and at substantially a right angle thereto.

2.
