PATENT OFFICE.
E XERClSl-NG APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 732,740, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed July 31, 1902.
T0 at whom it mat y concern:
Be it known that I, HANS M. HANSEN, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to a portable fold in g exercising apparatus; and its object is to provide a contrivance of this kind which may be extended and set up in a room or other space for use and when not in use may be taken apart and folded into a small space, one of the features of the invention being a certain collapsible construction of the platform of the device, whereby such platform when folded forms a box to contain the other parts of the apparatus.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described and claimed.
Of the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an exercising apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2'represents an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents an end elevation showing the apparatus partly folded. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of the upper part of the apparatus. Fig. 5 represents a perspective viewof the platform folded to form a box. Fig. 6 represents a detail view of one of theanchoring-screws. Fig. 7 represents a transverse sectional view of the platform folded to form a box. Fig. 8 represents a detail perspective View of the striking-cushion and a portion of the platform. Fig. 9 represents a sectional view of said cushion. Fig. 10 represents a perspective view of one of the platform brace beams. Fig. 11 represents a perspective view of one of the standard-joints.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, 10 10 are two rods or standards, each comprising an upper section 11 and a lower section 12, detachably united by a short sleeve or section 13, into which the ends of the sections 11 12 are threaded. At the lower end of each standard is a folding base comprising a hub or collar 14, slidable on the standard 10 and fixed by a setscrew 15, and a series of four arms 16 16, piv- Serial No. 117,828- (No model.)
oted to said collar, the lower'ends of three of said arms 16 being connected to the lower end of the standard 10 by rods 17, constituting struts ordistance-pieces, while the inside arm 16 is connected by a distance-piece consisting of a chain 170, which may be unhooked and the arm folded up against the standard 10, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus giving more foot room for the exerciser be tween the standards. When the apparatus is out of use, the sleeve 14 may be slid upwardly along the standard 10 until the arms 16 and struts 17 lie substantially parallel to the standard 10, as shown in Fig. 3. The folding base then occupies a greatly-contracted space.
The upper ends of the standards 10 are screwed into socket-pieces 18, fixed to the under side of a platform 19, from which is suspended a suitable exercising device, such as a punching-bag 20, having a flexible suspension 21.
22 is an annular cushion detachably fixed to the under side of the striking-platform by means of snap-fasteners-220 221 and adaptedto afford a comparativelynoiseless striking-surface for the bag, said cushion having a diametric crease 222, adapting it to be folded double.
The platform 19 is made with a middle seetion 23 and two end sections 24 24, connected therewith by hinges 250 250, said end sec- .tions being of substantially half the width of section makes one side of a rectangular box and the end sections make the other side. Each standard 10 is further connected with the platform 19 by two sets of brace-rods 25 26, pivotally connected at their lowerjends with sliding hubs 27 28, fixed to the standard 10 by set-screws 29 30. The outer; pair of braces have their ends bent over and fitted into socket-pieces 31 31 at the corners of the outer platform-sections 24, while the upper ends of the inner pair of braces 26 are provided with books 32 32, engaged with pins 33 33 on the corners of the middle section 23.- When the braces 25 26 are disconnected from the platform, they may be folded against the upper section 11 of the standard 10, the col lars 27 28 being slid downwardly, so as to bring the length of. said braces within the limits of the length of the section 11.
34 34 are suitable stays or guy chains, whose upper ends hook onto the four corners of the platform 19 and whose lower ends are provided with anchor-screws 35, Fig. 6, adapted to screw into the floor,.whereby the apparatus may be fixed toprevent its toppling over.
Along the end edges of the platform 19, on the lower side thereof, are affixed suitable flanges 36 36, each being in three sections with one section on each section of the platform. The hinges are fixed to these flanges, and when the platform is folded into box form the flanges 36 form two of the edge walls of the box. Along the top of the platform extend two brace-beams 37 37, detachably affixed to the platform by means of thumbscrews 38 38, each beam being in two sections 39 40, hinged at 41 to each other and folded together when the beams are used for braces, as in Fig. 2, the sections when extended being of just sufficient length to fill the space between the flanges 36 when the platform is folded, said beams being of double the width of said flanges. This arrangement allows the brace-beams 37 to be inserted into the open spaces between the end sections and middle section of the platform when these are folded together, thus making the remaining two edge walls of the'box. (Shown in Fig. 5.) To secure the front and back walls of the box together, I provide a pair of hooks 42 42, pivoted ,to the middle platform-section and engaging staples 43 43 on the end sections. The punching-bag 20 is an ordinary inflatable bag, which will lie flat when deflated and may be inclosed in the box formed by the platform 19. The standards 10 when their sections are detached and the end structures thereof folded may be placed inside of the box, together with the guys 34, so that all of the parts may be contained within the compass of the box. (Shown in Fig. 5.) The apparatus can then be readily carried about by means of a carrying-strap 44.
I claim- 1. An exercising apparatus comprising a collapsible platform whose sections are constructed to refit together into a box of predetermined shape.
2. An exercising apparatus comprising a collapsible platform whose sections are constructed to refit together into a box of predetermined shape, and an exercising device supported thereby and containable within said box.
3. An exercising apparatus comprising a collapsible elevated platform whose sections are constructed to refit together into a box of predetermined shape, and collapsible supporting means for said platform containable within said box.
4. An exercising apparatus comprising a collapsible elevated platform whose sections are constructed to refit together into a box of predetermined shape, collapsible supporting means for said platform containable within said box, and an exercising device suspended from said platform and containable within said box.
5. An exercising apparatus comprising an elevated collapsible platform whose sections are constructed to refit together into a box of predetermined shape, and a collapsible inflated striking-bag suspended from said plat form and containable within said box.
6. An exercising apparatus comprising an elevated collapsible platform whose sections are constructed to refit together into a box of predetermined shape, a strikingbag suspended therefrom, and a rebounding pad or cushion containable within said box.
7. An exercising apparatus comprising an elevated collapsible platform whose sections are constructed to refit together into a box of predetermined shape, a striking'bag suspended therefrom, and a collapsible rebounding pad or cushion detachably secured to said platform and containable within said box.
8. An exercising apparatus comprising an elevated platform composed of a middle and two end sections hinged together and provided with flanges, to form when folded together the side and two edge walls of a box, detachable top braces to form the remaining edge walls, supporting means for said platform, and an exercising device supported by said platform. I
9. An exercising apparatus comprising an elevated platform composed of a middle and two end sections hinged together and provided with flanges, to form when folded together the side and two edge walls of a box, detachable top braces to form the remaining edge walls, collapsible supporting means for said platform containable within said box when said supports are collapsed, and a collapsible punching-bag suspended from said platform and containable within said box when said bag is collapsed.
In testimony whereof I have aliixed my sig nature in presence of two witnesses.
I-IANS M. HANSEN.
