SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,332, dated June 30, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT P. BEATTY, a
of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packages, of which the followvention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to packages for cereals and the like, its object being to render their contents open to inspection without destroying the package, at the same time rendering them sufficiently secure to permit of their safe handling and transportation, While holding the contents intact, also to enable the user of the contents of the package to easily open same to pour out its contents and at the same time provide means whereby the package may be readily and securely closed to offectually keep out dust, vermin, &c., and prevent the spilling of such contents accidentally.
Said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I represents a cross-sectional view of a package embodying my invention. Fig. Ilrepresents a perspective view of a stopper forming a part of such package.
A receptacle or carton A, preferably made of paper or similar flexible material, has one of its sides provided with a plain unbroken aperture a, preferably circular. Such opening is closed by means of an imperforate stopper B, preferably turned from wood or similar hard and light material. This stopper is made of a form to correspond with the opening a, which in the form illustrated is circular, and is provided with two permanent parallel circumferential flanges or beads 13 and 1). ameter being suflicient to prevent the insertion into the passage of said flange through such opening. The second flange b is of a diameter slightly greater than that of said opening and is such as to prevent of its insertion into and through same by pressure, the elasticity and flexibility of the paper surrounding such opening permitting such passage and insertion without breaking the edge thereof. These two flanges form an intermediate cylindrical surface or groove b which is made of a diameter substantially equal to that of said opening, so that after flange b has passed through the latter the paper surrounding same may spring into such groove by reason of its flexibility and resume its normal position. The diameter of the intermediate groove is made very slightly larger than the diameter of the opening, so that when the paper springs into the groove after the passage of the bead or flange b' it presses against the cylindrical surface, thereby holding the stopper tight. I therefore include in the term diameter substantially equal to the term diameter very slightly greater than.- The outer surface b of flange b is slightly beveled, as shown, to facilitate its insertion into the opening, and the inner surface If is made square or abrupt with a sharp edge I), so as to resist withdrawal from said opening. Such construction of the upper portion of said flange permits the groove 17 to be made of minimum width, since the sharp edge and abrupt surface take hold of the paper securely, and so resist withdrawal.
The stopper is made of comparatively small thickness, so as to lie substantially flush with the top of the package. The outer edge of or peripheral portion of the upper surface of the stopper is made of convex-curved form, as shown, whereby such stopper is prevented from offering serious or objectionable resistance to other cartons which it may be necessary or desirable to cause to slide over the surface thereof. This feature is particularly advantageous in packing cartons in or unpacking cartons from cases holding a plurality thereof for shipment or storing, one or more cartons being easily removable from or insertibl'e in such cases when they are closely packed. This allows the package to be packed with convenience, the elasticity of the side in which the stopper is inserted allowing it to bend inwardly sufficiently to permit the edges of two packages to touch when placed in juxtaposition, as will be readily understood. In this manner the packageis provided with a removable stopper efiectually sealing same and which is held firmly and securely in the opening,such package being capable of being handled and transported without danger of premature or accidental removal of its stopper and being readily opened for inspection or for removal of its contents.
It will be seen that the above-described device diflers from that described in Patent No. 680,684, issued to me August 20, 1901, in that such patented device when in its reversed position involves the projection from the side of the carton to which it is secured of a part of the stopper which must of necessity include the thickness of two flanges and'an intervening distance equal to the width of the groove included between the said two flanges. This necessary feature of said patented device involves the necessity of providing a pr0jecting flange surrounding the side of the carton to which the stopper is attached in order to permit the cartons to be readily removed or inserted in a case when closely packed. Furthermore, my present invention does not contemplate the use of a perforate stopper or nozzle closed by means of a cork or a similar closure, but is permanently closed by being made of a single continuous imperforate stopper or button. The use of a single projecting flange permits the stopper to be made extremely thin, and hence involves practically no impediment other than those involved in the use of a plain carton unprovided with my invention.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the means herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. The combination with a receptacle made of flexible material such as paper and provided with a plain unbroken opening, of an imperforate rigid stopper with two end flanges each of greater diameter than that of said opening, the one flange being of a diameter such as to permit its passage through said opening and the other being of a diameter such as to prohibit its passage through said opening, and an intermediate rigid cylindrical portion of a diameter substantially equal to that of the said opening.
2. The combination with a receptacle made of flexible material such as paper and provided in one of its sides with a plain unbroken opening, of an imperforate rigid wooden stopper provided with two end flanges each of greater diameter than that of said opening, the one flange being of a diameter such as to permit its passage through said opening and the other being of a diameter such as to prohibit its passage through said opening, and a rigid cylindrical portion between the said flanges, said flange of greater diameter being of a thickness such that the depression allowed by the flexibility ot' the side of the receptacle in which it is located, will cause the outer surface of the stopper and the edges of such side to lie in substantially the same plane, the outer peripheral portion of such surface being of convex curved form.
