Be tknown that I, FRED W. LEUTHEssER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Directory or Name Boards, of

which the following isa specification.

This invention relates more particularly to directory or name boards designed or intended for use in buildings and offices for displayf y ing the names of tenants `or occupants of the building and for displayingin offices or other places the names of parties and addresses, in-

be readily inserted in platesV and removed when necessary or desired andfreplaced by another name, including also the feature of readily extending the space or spaces occupied by the names under one letter as may be needed for the insertion of other names under the same letter.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter describedand claimed.

The bill-board hasa front for receiving and retainingthe cards or `strips containing the names, This front is made up of a series or plurality of sections in the arrangement shown. Each section of the front is inthe shape of a strip of metal or other suitable material, thin sheet metal being preferred. This strip A has at each side'adjacent` to its edge a series of receivers or pockets a, which preferably are formed by pressing o ut a portion of the body, lso as to forma receiver or pocket having an opening at its inner edge for the insertion of the end of a name card or strip B into the receiver or pocket,l the receiver or pocket having a length, width, and depth sufficient to furnish a space into which `the end of the name card or strip iits, as

shown in Figs. 3, 5, 6, and 7. It is to be understood that the widthof the strip of metal or other material can be varied to suit the length of the name card or strip and the length can be varied to suit the length of the board and the board can consistof va single receiving and retaining sheet or strip or of a plurality of such sheets or strips arranged side by side or otherwise. The construction shown in Figs. fl, S, and 9 and in the section of the board at the center in Figs. l and 2 has, in addition to the receivers or pockets at each side, a loop b, likewise preferably pressed from the body of the sheet or strip under which the name card or strip can be slipped, leaving a space on one side of the loop for the telephonenumberor other memoranda and auspace on the other side of the loop for the name and address of a party, as shown by the center section ofthe boardwin Fig. l.

The construction of board shown employs a frame C, made of wood or other suitable materia-l and having in its under face a recess c to receive the edges of a backing D, also made of wood or other suitable material, and, as

shown, the backing has supporting orunitin g so as to hold the sections ofthe front of the board in position within the frame; but other means could be used for securing thesections of the front in place.

The board as a wh'oleis assembled or made up by placing the required number of sec- IOO tions for the front within the frame and placmg 1nl the receivers or pockets of the various sections the name cards or strips, for which purpose one of the name cards or strips can have thereon the letter A, and another card can have thereon the letter B, and still another card the letter C, and so on through the whole alphabet, these cards simply furnishing a guide under which to insert the name cards or strips in alphabetical order. The preferred form of name cards or strips B is one on which the names and other data can be printed by the use of a type-writer, the name cards or strips being sufticiently flexible, so that after the names are printed thereon they can be severally and separately'inserted in their proper places in the receivers or pockets of the front of the board and so that they can'be readily taken out and rcplaced by another name card or strip, if necessary, in changing` the directory.

The front, made of sheets or strips of thin material and having` the receivers or pockets for the ends of the name cards or strips pressed or formed from the body of the metal or other material, can be constructed at little expense, as by means of a suitable die or former a number of the receivers or pockets can be made at a single operation. The rcceivers or pockets are of a dimension to have the ends of the name cards or strips easily entered thereinto, and when entered the receivers or pockets furnish a retainer by which each name card or strip will beheld securely in position, and the receivers or pockets open on the inside and closed on the outside prevent the end withdrawal or slipping of the name card or .strip when inserted, and by using a flexible material for the name cards or strips the cards or strips can be readily. inserted in position or Withdrawn therefrom by simply bending the card so that the ends can be slipped into the receivers or pockets and when entered have the receivers or pockets retain the card in position. These several advantages pertain to the directory or name board of my invention and add greatly to the utility of the board, especially in regard to name-spaces,the changing of the name-spaces as to length occupied, and the ready insertion and removal of a card.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In a directory or name board, a front made of thin or sheet material and having adjacent to each edge a row of pockets thereon and projecting forwardly therefrom, each pocket open on its inner side and closed on its ends and outer side for the reception and retention of the end of a name card or strip,

the closed outer side of each pocket forming a stop or abutment against endwi'se movement and displacement of the card or strip when inserted, and the closed ends holding the card in alinement, substantially as described.

2. In a directory or name board, a front made of thin or sheet material and having formed therewith or stamped therefrom, adjacent to each side edge, a row of pockets, the pockets projecting forwardly from the face of the front and each pocket open on its inner side and closed on its ends and outer side for the reception and retention of the end of a name card or str-ip, the closed outer side of 'each pocket forming a stop or abutment against endwise movement and displacement of the card or strip when inserted, and the closed ends holding the card in alinement, substantially as described.

3. In a directory or name board, a front made of thin or sheet material and having formed therewith, or stamped therefrom, adjacent to each side edge, a row of pockets, andalso having formed therewith, or stamped therefrom, at one side of the center a row of loops, the pockets andthe loops projecting forwardly from the face of the front and each pocket open on its inner side and closed on its ends and outer side, for each pair of pockets to receive and retain the ends of a name card or strip and have the closed outer side of each pocket form a stop or abutment against endwise movement and displacement of the card or strip when inserted, and have the closed ends hold the card or strip in alinement with the loop overlying the card and forming a di- Vision of the card or strip on each side of the loop, substantially as described.

In a directory or naine board, the combination of a front formed of strips of thin or sheet material, each striphavin g formed therewith, or stamped therefrom, adjacent to each side edge, a row of pockets, each pocket open on its inner side and closed on its ends and outer side, name cards or strips of flexible material entered at their ends into the pockets for the closed outer side of eachpocket to form a stop or abutment against endwise movements and displacement ofthe card or strip when inserted and for the closed ends to hold the card in alinement, a backing for the front, and an inclosing frame surrounding the front and the backing, substantially as described.
