I have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Stop-Cocks, of which the fol-Y lowing is aspecification.
.This invention has more particular reference to stop-cocks which are capable of use either as a right-hand or a left-hand cock, as
circumstances may require.
The prinolpalobjeet of my invention is the construction of a stop-cock of this character? ,which can also be converted into an ordinary cock in which the plug turns all the way around.
A further object is to so construct the stop-' cock that. while having this three-fold capacity the wear of the rotary plugand its seat can be readily taken up. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the flat lower end of the casing A is provided with a cavity 6, adapted to receive the upper portion of a ball F or similar loose member,
and the washerD is provided in one side with a pair of segmental grooves or channels (1 d, which are arranged concentrically with the plug, and one or the other of which is adapted to register with the cavity e and receive the lower portion of said ball. The ball thus forms a projection which extends into the segmental channel opposite the cavity e, and the ends of said channel form stops or shoulders which strike the ball upon turning the plug in one or the other direction, thereby limiting the movement of the Each. of the channels (1 d is of the proper length to restrict the movement of the plug to about a quarter-turn and the two channels are located on opposite sides of the plug, so that by adjusting the washer on the plug to bring one or the other of its channels in the proper position with reference to the ball F a right-hand or a left-hand stop-cock is obtained accordingly. Figs. 1 and 3 show the cock in the form of a right-hand stopcock. In order to convert it into a left-hand cook, the screw-nut O and the washer D are removed from the plug, the latter is given a half-turn in its seat, and the washer is re placed after having been turned a quarter in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3.
On the side opposite that containing the segmental channels at d the washer is preferably provided with a circular channel d arranged concentrically with the plug and having the same radius as the channels at d, so as to receive the ball F when the washer is reversed to the position shown in Fig. 2. As the washer presents no stop-shoulders in this reversed position, the plug can be turned through a complete circle in either direction, like that of an ordinary cock without stops. When the cock is converted into this form, the circular channel of the washer in con junction with the cavity 8 of the casing serves as a pocket for the ball F, preventing loss of the ball and keeping it ready at hand for converting the cock into a right or a left hand stop-cock, as desired. By this construction the same cock can be readily converted into any one of the three types in common use, thus obviating the necessity of manufacturing and keeping in stock three separate kinds of cocks.
While I prefer to employ a loose ball for forming a stop projection on the casing, the latter may be provided with a teat or fixed projection instead of a'ball.
If desired, the arrangement of the ball-cavity e and the segmental washer-channels d d may be reversed, as illustrated in Figs. 6, 7,. and 8that is, the ball-cavity may be forme in one side of the washer, as shown at e, and the channels in the lower end of the casing, as shown at (1 e In each of the constructions herein shown and described the stop device is arranged between the casing and the washer mounted on the tapering plug. The same cannot, therefore, cut the plug or form a bur thereon, which would cause leakage, and it does not interfere with the tightening of the plug when the same becomes loose from wear, thereby permitting wear of the plug to be taken up, as in ordinary stop-cocks of this class.

The combination of a casing having a seat, with a member projecting from the lower end of the casing on one side of said seat, a plug arranged in said seat, and a washer reversibly secured to said plug and provided on opposite .sides with a segmental channel and a circular channel, respectively, said channels being both of the same radius and adapted to interchangeably receive the said member, whereby the cock may be converted into a stop-cock or an ordinary cock, at will, by reversing the washer on the plug, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a casing having a tapering seat and provided at its lower end on one side of said seat with a cavity, a tapering plug arranged in said seat and provided at its small end with a screw-stem and above said stem with a square portion, a
