Description

Patented Nov. l8, I902. G. L-QBATES.
COCK. g umc'ion filed I ab. 27, 1902.)
(No Model.)
GEORGE LYNES BATES, OF NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND.
COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,838, dated November 18, 1902.
Application filed February 27, 1902. Serial No. 95,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LYNES BATES, brass-founder, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Queens road, Nottingham, England, have invented certain new and useful (locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for diminishing friction in a plug-cock and to give a clear passage of full bore through it.
In accordance with my invention the plug of the cock consists of a portion only ofa cone or cylinder, one side being completely cutaway and provided with a transverse passage and with grooves at the back to receive the spindle. The transverse section of the plug at the passage is an are less than a semicircle and the plug is attached to a cranked spindle, the uncranked parts of which are substantially parallel with and fit loosely into the grooves at the back of the plug, the cranked part of the spindle being turned away from the plug, thus leaving between it and the plug a full-bore passage.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in longitudinal section, of a two-way cock made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the plug and cranked spindle connected. Fig. 3 shows a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig.2. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the cranked spindle in side elevation. Fig. 6 shows a rear elevation of the plug.
The shell or valve-chamber a is of usual construction, and it is provided with a cap I), equipped with a stuffingbox, &:c., in the usual way. The plug 0, as shown, is somewhat frustum shape. It is adapted on its outer surface to fit the valve-chamber and is cut away at 0, so that when the plug is turned to open the cock there will be a full-bore passage through the valve-casing. The plug, as shown, is provided with a leather packing d, sunkin a recess in the face of the plug and held therein by a screw e,en gaging a threaded plate or nutf. The plug 0 has vertical grooves you its rear side to receive the cranked spindle D. This spindle is provided with a segmental flange h, which engages with a stop h on the shell, as indicated in Fig. 1. By this means the downward movement of the spindle is limited and the spindle is made to engage the plug loosely. It will be observed that the transverse section of the plug at the passage is an are less than a semicircle and that the uncranked parts of the spindle are parallel to and fit loosely into the grooves in the back of the plug, while the cranked part of the spindle is turned away from the plug, leaving between it and the plug a full-bore passage.
I claim as my invention In a plug-cock the combination of a plug longitudinally grooved at the back whose transverse section at the passage is an are less than a semicircle, and a cranked spindle whose uncranked parts are parallel to and fit loosely into the groove, and whose cranked part is turned away from the plug leaving between it and the plug a full-bore passage.
GEORGE LYNES BATES.
