SPRING GLIP FOR HOLDING PAPERSLM.
APPLIOATION'IILED AUG; 20,1902.

Patented June 23, 1903.
ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. MOGILL OF RlVERDALE-ON-HUDSON, NEW YORK.
SPRING-CLIP FO-R'HOLDING PAPERS, &. c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731,597, dated June 23, 1 903.
' Application filed August 20, 9612. SerialNo. 120,350. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/perm.- l
Be it known that 1,.GEORGE W. MCGILL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Riverdale-on-Hudson, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in] Spring-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved spring-clip for holding papers, cards, and like articles, it.
being also adapted to.l1ang or suspend the same from a nail or rod or like articles; and
itconsists of a single piece of suitable springwire fashionedinto a ring of helical forma-:
tion, consisting of two spirally-shaped strands superimposed one upon the other in parallelcontact and spring-bearing throughout the length of their coils and with part of one or both of such strands or coils projected out- Ward radially from the rest of such coil at op-l posite points in the circumference of the ring, providing the device at'its one side or top part with a loop or hook for suspendingit and at its opposite side or bottom part with a projecting li'p adapted to serve as a ready means of opening the ring edgewise at such bottom part and of guiding to such opening the articles to be clasped between its superimposed coils.
In the accompanyingrdrawings, forming \part of this specification, and in which similar reference numerals and letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 shows a front view in perspective of,the ringclip fashioned as a paper-holder proper-and unprovided with means for suspending it. Figs.
. 2 and 3are similar views of the clip provided at its top part or upper circumference of one of its coils with a ring. for hanging or.- ,suspending it from 'a nail. .or like article, and
Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Figs. 2and 3, exceptingthat instead of the suspensionrings shown in those figures hooks are provided to enable the device to be hung from a string or'rod and hooked to a-fabric. is an edgeor side view of' Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 Fig. 8 shows the device constructed as shown in Fig. 2 applied in holding and hanging a card or other paper.
The wire forming the body or helical clamping-ring A of the device is doubled except at Fig. 6
.(marked, respectively, 1 and 2 in the drawings,) and they are in parallel spring contact or hearing with each other throughout their coiled length. At the base of the device the .wire in one of the coils, preferably the rear coil, is folded out from the circumference of such coil and back upon itself in the same plane and in manner to provide in that part of the coil a looped and radially-projecting lip 3, adapted to serve as a ready means of opening or separating the superimposed coils of the helical clamping-ring A edgewise at .that point and of guiding tosuc'h opening the articlesbeing clipped.
u In Fig. 2 the single strand 4 of the wire forming-the top part of the helical ring and leading to both its coils is projected radially outward and upward from the circumference of such ring in looped formation, providing the clip a suspending loop or ring 5, adapting it, with the paper clipped therein, to be hung or suspended from a nail.
In Fig. 3 instead of the single wire 4 being projected outward and upward to form such suspending loop or ring the end part of the coil 1 is continued up to and above the top of the helical ring A and there bent back upon itself in manner toform the outward and radially-projecting suspension loop or ring 5'.
In'Fig. 4. the single wire 4 in the upper part of the helicalring A and leading to both the coils is projected outward from the circumfere'nce thereof in doubled formation and folded over upon itself-in manner to provide the device an outwardly projecting 'twostranded looped nose-hook 6, adapted to be hooked over a cord" or rod in suspending the device therefrom, and in Fig. 5 the end part of the coil 2 is shown continued up to and above the top of the helical ring A,as in Fig. 3, and there vertically or radially projected outward and folded back upon'itself in manner to provide a single-strand supending-hook 6 set radially with respectto the coils and adapted to be hooked'ov'era cord or rod or to have its pin-pointed nose inserted in some fabric or other fibrous article in suspending the device therefrom.
imposed, one upon the other, in parallel spring-bearing, and having a fold of wire projecting radially outward from the central part of one of such coils in manner to provide the device a radial projecting lip adapted to facilitate the separation, or opening edgewise, of such superimposed coils, and the guiding to such opening of the articles being clipped.
2. A spring-clip consisting of a single piece of suitable spring-wire the greater portion of which is coiled upon itself in manner to provide the device a helical ring-shaped body partor frame consisting in part of two strands of the wire normally in parallel spring-bearing with each other, the double-stranded side of such frame being provided with a projecting lip, extending radially from the central part of one of the strands therein and adapted to assist in separating such strands at that point and entering between them the articles being clipped, and the opposite side of the frame being provided with means with which to suspend the device from a nail, rod or like article.
3. A spring-clip fashioned from a single wire having its end parts coiled upon each other in manner to provide the device a helical ring-frame, with part of one of the coiled wires providing the doubled lower periphery of such ring-frame, folded and projected outwardly beyond the other wire therein in manner to provide the frame at its lower periphery with an outwardly-projecting lip, and having both strands of the wire in the frame, on each side of such lip, superimposed in spring-bearing one upon the other.
4. A spring-clip fashioned from a single wire having its end parts coiled upon each other in manner to provide the device a helical ring-frame, with part of one of the coiled wires providing the doubled lower part of the periphery of such ring-frame, folded and projected outwardly beyond the other wire therein in manner to provide the frame at its lower periphery with an outwardly-projecting lip, and having both strands of the wire in the frame, on each side of such lip, superimposed in spring-bearing one upon the other, and having part of the wire in the opposite side of the frame folded outwardly therefrom in manner to provide the clip with means for suspending it.
Signed at Riverdale-on-I-Iudson, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 12th day of May, A. D. 1902.
