a citizen of the United States, residing at Galeton, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im- .provements in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a specification..
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in car-couplers; and its object is to provide a coupler of the Janney type having aknuckle-operating lever in the head thereof and a sliding weighted pin so arranged as to operate said lever1 when desired.
Another object is to provide means for promptly returning said lever and pin to normal position when said pin is released.
A further object is to. so locate the pin as to enable the same to be used in locking the knuckle in closed position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the further novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, inv which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a coupler constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section therethrough.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a draw-head having ears 2 extending therefrom, within which is pivoted a knuckle 3. An arm 4L projects into the drawhead from the knuckle, and a lever 5 is fulcrumed within said draw-head and extends in rear of arm 4. A pin 6 extends transversely of the draw-head, near the top thereof, and projects througha slot 7, formed longitudinally Within the upper portion of a weighted pin 8. This pin is suspended in front of the inner curved end of lever 5, and a rod 9 or other device extends therefrom through an aperture 10, formed in the top of the draw-head. The normal position of pin 8 is in the path of the end of arm 4, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and said arm cannot be swung forward unless the pin 8 is drawn back by means of the rod 9. The lower end of pin S is beveled, as shown at 11, and a spring-plate 12 is arranged within the draw-head and below said end and terminates in an upwardlycurved spring 13, which projects in the rear of the inner end of lever 5.
As above stated,vthe arm -i and knuckle 3, connected therewith, are normally locked in closed position, because the pin 8 normally hangs at a point in the path of the inner endof arm 4. When it is desired to uncouple,the arm 9 is drawn upward, thereby causing pin S to swing upon thepin 6 and at the same time slide thereon. When the pin comes into contact with the inner end of lever 5, said lever is swung upon its fulcrum and tensions the spring 13 and at the same time throws arm 4 outward. When the rod 9 is released, the pin drops into normal position and spr-ing 13 throws lever 5 back into its original position. This movement of the spring also serves to assist the pin in traveling downward upon the inclined plate 12 into position. Vhe-n two draw-heads similar to the one above described are brought together and the knuckles forced inward, the arms 4f thereof upon coming into contact with the pins 8 will force them backward, and thereby tension the spring 13. As soon vas the pins are passed they will be forced to their original positions by the springs 13, and the arms 4E and knuckles 3 will then be secured. If desired, the spring 13 may be dispensed with and gravity alone resorted to for returning the locking-pin to normal position.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of myinvention; buit I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacriciug the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a coupler, the combination with a draw-head having a knuckle pivoted thereto, and an inwardly extending arm to the knuckle; of a lever fulcrumed within the draw-head and extending in rear of said arm, a slotted locking-pin within the draw--head and normally in the path of the arm, a beveled end to the pin, and an inclined plate for guiding said pin to normal position.
2. In a coupler, the combination with a draw-head having a knuckle pivoted there- IOO to, and an arm extending inward from the knuckle; of a lever fulcrumed in the draW- head and extending in rear of the arm, a Weighted locking-pin within the draw-head and in front of said lever, a beveled end to the pin, and au inclined plate for guiding said pin into the path of the arm.
3. In a coupler, the combination with a draw-head having a knuckle pivoted thereto, and an arm extending inward from the knuckle; of a lever fulcrumed Within and extending in rear of the arm, a slotted 1ocking-pin mounted Within the draw-head and in front of the lever, means for sliding and swinging said pin within the draw-head, and an inclined plate for guiding the pin into the path of the arm.
