TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, ELIPIIALET S. SCHIP-TURB, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New .York, have invented certain novel and useful Improvements in the Mode of Constructing Calipers, Dividers, or Compasses; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andcxact description thereof.' reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a, part of the specification. i
To enable the public to understand the nature of my invention, and those who are skilled in the manufacture thereof to construct the same, I will describe it as follows:
Figure 1 represents a pair of calipers; A is the hea'l; B B' B" B'" are the lege; c is a small set-screw, which slightly moves the adjustable leg B" upon the fulcrum or pin a, when required to move the foot; s is a. set-screw which secures and regulates the two head-platesA A'.
Figure 2 is a pair of universal dividers, provided with braces 1 2 3 4 to strengthen the legs, 'as well as to 5 s give the draughtsman more perfect control over the lnstrument. The lnnersurfaces or disks of the head A arev provided with a circular wedge-shaped rib, R, and corresponding groove, R', as shown at figs. 3 and 4. "his rib R ts into the groove R', and when the two sections of the head A and A' are secured together by the setscrew s, a greater amount of fric'tionis brought to bear upon the inner disks or corrugated faces of the circular plates forming the head of the dividers or calipers.
The superiority of the above arrangement over the ordinary Compasses or calipers that are in common use, is, first, the joints or head of the dividers may be made as shown at iig. 2, so that either leg will revolve entirely around upon the set-screw s; at the same time the footfmay be held at any fixed angle by means of the said screw, and also the screw c in the adjustablel leg B", tig. 1; secondly, by means of the rib -R and groove R', upon the inner disks or faces of the head-plates A A', I am enabled to produce a truer arch, and more firmly secure the head-plates A A' in their proper places, by means of a screw, S, notwithstanding 'the wear of the instrument, and, by means of the braces 1 2 3 4, I strengthen the legs, and have better control of the compasses.
The novelty of my invention does not consist in the use of set-screws s to hold the foot of the dividers, calipers, or Compasses at any xed point, but my invention isthe mode of increasing the cohesive attraction of the revolving plates, by means of ribs and grooves R and R', upon the inner disks or faces of the head of universal or other dividers, secured by means of set-screws or other suitable devices; also, the adjustable legB" of the calipers. Therefore,
What I claim as'novel and useful, and-what I wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The wedge-shaped circular rib R and groove R', secured by a set-screw, s, or an equivalent thereof, for the purpose substantially as described. I i
2. I claim adjusting the leg B" of the caliper, by means of a set-screw, c, in the manner as above set forth, and shown in the drawings at fig. 1.
3. I claim a universal divider, with-.braces 1 2 3 4, and having the inner surfaces or disks of the head A corrugated, or ribbed and grooved, as shown at igs. 3 and 4, for the purpose as above set forth.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
