GRAIN-ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 731,268, dated June 16, 1903.

- and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Grain-Elevator, of which the following is a full,.clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in grain-elevators of the class having. an endless chain of buckets, the object being to provide a simple means for automatically cutting off the supply of grain after a certain amount shall have passed into the elevator, and thus prevent choking of the buckets while running at full speed.
I will describe a grain-elevator embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding; parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grain-elevator embodying my invention, and 2 is a cross-section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base-casing of the elevator, from which flues 2 3 extend upward to the point of discharge. Operating through these flues and around a drum 4; in the casing is an endless apron 5, carrying the buckets 6. Leading into opposite ends of the casing are the feed-chutes '7 8,
and movable in these feed-chutes are gatevalves 9 10. i From the valve 9 rods 11 extend upward through guides 12, and the upper ends of these rods 11 are connected to a cross-rod 13, from the ends of which links 14: extend to connection with the outwardly-disposed members of the angle-levers 15. vers are mounted on a rod 16, having bearings Having hearings in posts 18, secured on the top of the casing between the flues 2 and 3, is a shaft 19, and on the ends of this shaft are upwardly-disposed arms 20, having draw-rod connections 21 with the upwardly and inwardly disposed members of the angle-levers 15. Arms 22 are also extended downward from the ends of the shaft 19, and projected at right angles from the arms and 22 is another arm 23, on which counterbalancing-weights 241 are adjustably mounted.

Also extended at right angles to said arms 20 and 22 at one end of the shaft is a short arm 25, the object of which will hereinafter appear.
The valve 1'0 has rod connections 26, movable through guides Y27 and connected by means of links 28 to the outwardly and iiiwardly disposed members of angle-levers 29 in a similar manner to that first described. From the inwardly and upwardly disposed members of the angle-levers 29 draw-rods 30 extend to connection with the arms 22. As these draw-rods are connected, respectively, above and below the rock-shaft 19, it is obvious that when the said shaft is rocked the two valves 9 10 will be simultaneously opened or closed. At one side of the casing, near the bottom, is an opening 31, and arranged in the opening is a metal frame 32, on which is cast a hood 33, andmovable in this hood for primarily closing the opening 31 is a door 34. This door 34 is hinged at its lower edge to the frame An arm 35 projects outward from the door 31, and from this arm a draw-rod 36 extends upward to connection with the arm 25. A spring 37 connected at one end to said arm 35 and at the other end to the casing 1,
serves to move the door to its closed position. The weights 24E serve to balance the weight of the valves 9 and 10.
In the operation the grain will pass into the casing through the chutes 7 8, of course the ment the valves will be opened through the medium of the rock-shaft and the other connections. To entirely cut off the feed of grain, valves 38 39 are movable, respectively, in the chutes 7 8.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an elevator, a'base-casing having an opening at one side, a hood surrounding said opening, adoor mounted to swing in the hood,
an inlet-chute for the casing, a valve movable in the chute, and means operated by a movement of the door for moving said valve to closed position.
2. In an elevator, at base-casing, an endless chain of buckets movable therein, the said casing having an opening at one side, a hood surrounding said opening, a door mounted to swing in said hood, chutes leading into opposite ends of the said casing, gate-valves movable in said chutes, a rock-shaft supported on the casing, a connection between said rockshaft and the said door, and an operating connection between said rock-shaft and the valves.
3. In a grain-elevator, a base-casing having an opening at one side, a hood surrounding said opening, a door mounted to swing in the hood, an arm extended outward from the door, a spring connection between said arm and the casing, chutes leading into opposite ends of the casing, valves in said chutes, a rock-shaft mounted on the casing, a rod connection between said rock-shaft and the said arm on the door, angle-levers arranged at the ends of the casing, link connections between the outwardly and upwardly disposed members of said levers and the valves, connections between the upwardly and inwardly disposed members of said levers, and arms extended in opposite directions from said rockshaft.
