PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LOUIS GRIFFIN, OF WELLSVILLE, OHIO.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,637, dated June 9, 1903.
Application filed February 4 1903. Serial No. 141,789. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN LoUIs GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVellsville, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Pick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a pick in which the helve maybe securely fastened without weakening the helve atany point and from which the helve when broken may be readily removed to permit of placing a new helve in position. This end I attain by recessing the pick at its middle portion and providing a clamping-plate adapted to be fastened over said recess, the recess being of undercut or dovetail form, so that when the helve of corresponding shape is fastened therein it will be impossible for the parts to become separated while the pick is in use.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the middle portion of the pick, the clamping-plate being omitted from the View. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4 4: of Fig. l, and Fig; 5 is a front or plan View of the middle portion of the pick.
The body of the pick is preferably constructed with a reduced portion a, and the clamping-plate b is set into this reduced portion, thus allowing the clamping-plate to lie flush with the side of the pick,
(0 indicates the dovetail cavity which is fastening screws orbolts d are passed through the pick and clamping-plate and hold the latter securely yet removably in place. It
will be observed that this construction in no way weakens the helve and is therefore advantageous over the usual manner of securing the helves of picks, since in fastening the usual wedges into the helves the latter are split and weakened materially. It will also be observed that the invention does not involve the employment of extra material, and the increasein labor in constructing the pick is imperceptible as compared to the advantages attained.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will'without departing from the spiritand scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent 1. A pick, comprising a pick-body, and a clamping-plate removably secured thereto, one of said parts having a reduced-portion and a recess or cavity in the reduced portion to receive the helve of the pick, the said cavity being closed at the front of the pick.
2. A pick comprising a body having a r'educed portion, and a cavity formed in the side face of said reduced portion approximately at the center thereof, and a clamping plate fitting in the said reduced portion of the pick-body and flush with the side of the pick, the said clamping-plate being formed with a corresponding cavity matching with the cavity in the reduced portion of the pickbody, the cavities jointly receiving the helve of the pick, the said cavities being open at the rear face of the pick but closed at the front face, and fastening screws or bolts passing through the reduced portion of the body of the pick near each end thereof and through the clamping-plate'to hold the latter removably in place, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN LOUIS GRIFFIN.
