PATENT OFFICE.
OMNIBUS, TRANI-CAR, GARDEN, OR OTHER SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,189, dated June 2, 1903. -Application filed January 9, 1901. Renewed May 8, 1903. Serial No. 156,221. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWIN REGINALD HAL- STEAD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at and whose postoflice address is Brunton House, Warwick road, Carlisle, in the county of Cumberland, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Omnibus,
'Tram-Car, Garden, or other Seats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to omnibus, tram-car, garden, and other seats, and has for its object to provide for the seat-surface being kept dry or clean when not in use.
In the drawings, Figures l, 2, and 3 are side views of theseat with the parts thereof in different positions. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are front views, respectively, of Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
I make the seat-surface A in two portions act', one, a, of which is xed to the usual seatframing B, while the other, a', is movable and hinged at a2 a2 to the fixed portion a. Normally the movable portion a lies over the xed portion a, as shown in Figs. l and 4, and so serves as a cover therefor when out of use; but it is adapted when the seat is required for use to be turned up and over until it lies in the same plane as the xed portion a, thus completing the seat-surface, as will be evident from Figs. 3 and 6. Figs. 2 and 5 show an intermediate position of the movable portion a'.
At the under side of the fixed portion a I pivot upon a bracket a3, attached to the under side of the fixed portion a and adj acently to the hinges A0,2 a2 of the two portions a. a', a lever (Lone arm, c, of which is adapted to coact with the movable portion a', while the other arm, c', is furnished with a weight c2,
io designedto cause the lever C to repose in a position at or about right angles to the seat- `surface when in the out-of-use position, as illustrated in Figs. l and 4. Thus it will be understood that when the seat is required for use the person lifts the movable portion on and turns it up and over past the position represented V'by Figs. 2 and 5 to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 6, and then sits down,
whereupon this portion a' is retained in the desired position in opposition to the tendency of the weighed lever C, which, as represented,
assumes a horizontal or like position underneath the seat-surface A. However, on the person rising from the seat the weighted 1ever C at once reacts to resume its normal position and in so doing returns the movable portion o.' of the seat-surface to lie upon the other, as in Figs. 1 and 4.
A back to the seat is not shown in the guros under notice; but of course one may be provided fand arranged in any of the wellknown ways.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, a frame, a horizontally-extending seat portion fixed thereto and extending part way across the frame, a vportion d' hinged to the fixed portion and adapted to lie in the same plane therewith when in use and to rest on the frame at its free end, said portion when folded back resting on the xed portion of the seat, and a weighted lever to engage the hinged portion to move it from its .position of use into its folded position, sublstantially as described. l
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN REGINALD HAnsTEAf-D.
