Description

' Patented-June 2, 1903..
onRL E. WENZEL, or NEWARK, NEW JERsE -'DETQNA;TING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent N0. 729,985, dated June 2,1903.
Application filed November 13, 1902. Serial No. 131-,142. (No model.) i
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL E. WENZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and originahlmprovement in Detonating Toys;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beiu g had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide a detonating toy adapted to automatically feed across its anvil a tape or connected series of explosive caps; to thus enable a rapid succession of reports to be fired, to provide a hammer adapted to sever said explosivetape-as it descends upon the anvil, to secure a simple and durable construction, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which will be referred to hereinafter in conneetion with the description of. the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved deures, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved toy with. the nearer side plate of the frame partially broken away to disclose the parts more fully Fig. 2 is a front end view of the toy, and l'ig'. a rear end view.
In said drawing. 2 indicates a carriage or frame so p portiu g a cannon 3, the whole being preferably cast in two longitudinal halves with the joint or division -line extending lengthwise of the cannon. At the rear end of the cannon ahammer 4, pivoted atjts lower end upon a rod 5, extending across the lower part of the frame and serving as a brace therefor. A spring i normally holds said hammer in forward position with its head against the cannon, and an operating-lever 7, fulcrumed at its lower end upon a screw Sin In the present invention an anvil 12 is of the said tape-guide.
one side plate of the frame is providedat its inner side with transverse recesses or grooves 9 10, adapted to receive the end of a finger 11, projecting laterally "from the hamrn'er. The lower groove is inclined atits bot-' tom forwardly, and thus adaptedto'pass the finger end from behind, but to carry the ham mer with it on a backward swing until said finger sliding on the lever-arrives at the upper groove 11, through which it escapes fora forward throw, all as described in detail in my prior application, Serial No. 128,364, filed October 22,1902.
formed at theupper part of the rear end of the cannon, and just below said anvil is at-' tached by lateral ears'13 the upper end of a tape guide or passage-way 14, which extends downwardly forward beneath-the cannon to nearthe plane of the lower edges of the side plates of the frame 2. Said tape-guide is 7 preferably formed of sheet metal rolled up into a somewhat flattened tube adapted to loosely receive the tape and being longitudinally open or slotted, as at 15, alongits front side.
The hammer 4 at its pointof pivoting upon the rod 5 is extendedllaterally to form ahub 16, from the ends ofwhich arms '17 17 extend forwardly andupwardly on opposite sides of the tape-guide 14. Betweenthe forward'ends of said arms 17 extends a bar 18,1ying in front of the tape-guide, and upon this baris pivoted an arm 19, which extends upwardly rearward and lies at its free end in the slot 15 A spiral spring 20, coiled on the bar 18,'bears at one end upon the said arm 19 to normally hold it in said slot, and said arm is at its extremity pointed or otherwise adapted to engage the tape or strip of caps.
lli'operation, the hammer db'eing drawn back or away from the anvil 12, a strip of caps is slid up through the guide 14 until its' upper end projects in proper position. The
v to move the said tape in accordance with the distance between the caps or explosive deposits.
the entrance of a strip of caps, and said. lojwei j end is in the present drawings shownli eldin place by a cross-piece 26, extending' froma side to side of the frame 2. v
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is g 1'. ,In a detonating t-oy having an anvil and a hammer pivoted below said anvil of a cap strip or tape guideleading upwardly rear ward to said anvil and lying in front of said hammer, a rigid arm extending from said hammer past said tape-guide, and a finger pivoted on said arm and being adapted to 7 feed a strip of capsalong said guide.
2. In a detonating'toy having an anvil and a hammer pivoted below said. anvil, of a cap strip or tape guide leading upwardly, rear ward to said anvil and lying in front of said hammer, rigid arms-extending from opposite ends of the pivotal hub of said hammer forwardly on oppositesides'of the tape-guide, v
a cross-bar supported by said arms in front ofthe tape-guide, and a tape-feeding finger:
pivoted on said barand being adapted to em rear-ass gage at its free end 'a'cap-tape lying in said guide. I
3. In adeionating toy, airanvil, a flattened tubular iape g'uide exteiiding downwardly forward from said anvil. and being slotted at its front side, a-ham-in er pivoted back of said tape-guide audfibelowthe anvil and having an arm'fejzitendi'ngforwardly from its fulcrumal pivot past the tape-guide, and a tapefeeding-fingerpivotally supported by said armand having its free end normally lying in the slot of the tape-guide.
'. 4; A detonating toyhaving a substantially verticalflanviha flattened tubular tape=guide ,eXtendIi-ng downward away from said anvil {and being longitudinally slotted, a hammer 'a't'the rear of said tape-guide, and a pivoted tape-feeding finger having a free end lying in *said slotted tape-guide and being connected to said hammer to be operated thereby.
5. The combination of a frame comprising opposite upright side pieces, a cannon supported on said frame and presenting at its rear a vertical anvil, a tape-guide leading from the lower edge of said anvil downward between said side pieces of the frame, a hammer between said side pieces at the rear of said tape-guide, and a tape-feeding finger con- 'nected to said hammer and'projecting into said tape-guide.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of November, 1902.
