PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE t. HILL, or cHULA, MISSOURI.
MORTISING-CHISEL.
$PECIFIGATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 729,584, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed July 14, 1902. Serial No. 115.487- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chula, in the county of Livingston and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mortising-Chisels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to mortising-chisels; and it consists of certain novel features of combination and construction of parts, the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth.
The object of my invention is to provide a mortising-chisel which will cut all kinds of wood with the greatest case without injury to the wood or without breaking down particles thereof, as is now common with an ordinary chisel or mortising-bit.
Other objects and advantages will behereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the chisel shownin Fig. 1. --Fig. 3 shows a slightlymodified construction from that presented in Figs. 1 and 2, While Figs.4 and 5 show an edge view of slightly-varied form of construction from that presented in Fig. 2. Figs. 6 and 7 show an attachment for my mortising-chisel designed to free the same from shavings or the like and also protect the cutting edge, as hereinafter specified.
The various details of myinvention and cooperating accessories will for convenience be designated by numerals,--the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views. I
In carrying out my invention I provide, as is common, a suitable form of handle 1, having the shank 2, to which is secured in any preferred way or integrally formed therewith the blade or body portion proper, 3, constituting my mortising-chisel, said blade or body section 3 preferably having'theedges thereof bent or formed at right angles to the body portion, as indicated by the numeral 4:- The cutting edge of my improved chisel is provided with a centrally-disposed tooth or cutting-section 5, which in this instance is substantially V-shaped in outline and is properly beveled or otherwise sharpened to present a keen cutting edge.
- Designed to complement or cooperate with the central point 5 are the inclined edges 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, while the right-angled extensions or edges 4 are preferably beveled or rounded off at their lower edges, as indicated by the numeral 7. It will be understood that the central point (indicated at 5 in Fig. 1) may be more or less extended, as indicated by the numeral 8 in Fig. 3, the edges 6 being left of substantially the same extent as presented in Fig. 1 By thus extending the central point the chisel may be very accurately entered at any desired point. Instead of beveling the lower end or round- 'ing the same, as shown in Fig. 2 and indicated by the numeral 7, said edge may be provided with the V-shaped notch 9, as shown in Fig. 4, or with a notch of more acute angular form, as indicated by the numeral 10,
thereby leaving the rounded terminal 11 of the side member 4.
By reference to Fig. 6 the point of the' extended member 8 may be rounded, as indicated by the numeral 12, and as the cooperating edges of these angular extensions of the cutting edge cooperate with each other in their action. upon the wood or other substance to which they are applied such substance will be very cleanly and smoothly severed. In. some instances I desire to provide the movable member 13, which is adapted to move freely between the flanges 4 by means of the controlling'shaft 14, thereby enabling the member 13 to be thrust outward, as indicated by the dotted lines 15 in Fig. 6, and free the points of the cutting edge from any shavings or the like that may adhere thereto. The said member 13 also serves as a pro tection for the cutting edge when thus moved outward beyond the end of the chisel-blade.
The shank 2 may be readily made tubular and the shaft 14 extended therethrough and provided with the controlling handle 16, whereby the member 13 may be freely raised and lowered as desired. Itis thought for all ICO and the chisel used without the same, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, though I reserve the right to manufacture the bit with or Without said attach1nent,as I may find most desirable so to do in practice. By providing the pointed cutting edge substantially as herein described the cutting capacity of my chisel is greatly multiplied.
WVhile I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts'deemed necessary in materializing my invention, I wish to comprehend all substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention. I
Having thus described the construction and manner of using my improved mortisingchisel, further reference to the details is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herei n-described mortising-chisel comprising a suitable handle having a shank and a cutting-blade having side flanges formedat angles to its body portion with a cutting edge having centrally-disposed tooth or cutting portion substantially V-shaped in outline and beveled, upon opposite edges of one face and inclined edges 6 upon opposite sides of the central tooth, and extending from the opposite sides of the base of said central tooth to the side edges of the blade, the side flanges being inclined at their lower edges, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described mortising-chiselcomprising a suitable handle having a shank and a cutting-blade having side flanges formed at angles to its body portion with a cutting edge having centrally-disposed tooth or cutting portion substantially V-shaped in outline and beveled, upon opposite edges of one face inclined edges 6 upon opposite sides of the central tooth, and extending from the opposite sides of the base of said central tooth to the side edges of the blade, the side flanges being inclined at their lower edges, said shank being tubular, a shaft extending therethrough and provided with a controlling-handle and a movable member fitted between-the opposite fianges of the body portion and connected with said shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
