VILLIAM G. RIVERS, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHAVI'NG-MUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,417, dated May 26, 1903.
Application filed February 17, 1903. Serial No. 143,773. (No modeLl T all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. RIVERS, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Shaving-Mug, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in shaving-mugs, the object being to provide in the cup a simple means for holding the soap cake out of contact with the Water, but so arranged that the soap may be'forced into the Water to Wet the same preparatory to forming a lather. l
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
I will describe Aa shaving-mug embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a shaving or lather cup embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections respectively on the lines 2 2 and 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the cup, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. et. y
Referring to the drawings, designates the cup, made of any suitable material-such, for instance, as metal or earthenware. The bottom l1 of the cup is provided with openings 12 13, which are controlled by the valveplates 14 15, connected one with the other and arranged to slide in guideways 1G, secured to the under side of the bottom 11. From the Valves an operating-rod l? `entends outward through an opening in the Wall of the cup. Movable vertically in the cup is a perforated plate'lS, on which a cake of soap 19 is designed to be placed. The perforated plate 18 is supported from the bottom 11 by means of coiled springs 20. I have shown four of these coiled springs; but my inven. tion is not limited to any particular number. The lower ends of the springs connect with lugs 21, mounted on the bottomll7 and the other ends engage with lugs formed on the under side of the plate 18. These lugs will prevent lateral displacement of the springs. A portion 22 of the cup extends somewhat below the bottom 11, and this portion 22 when the cup is in use is seated in a pan 23.
In use Water and soap will be placed in the cup, as indicated in Fig. 1. When it is desired to dampen or Wet the soap, it may be forced downward into the Water by the pressure of the lather-brush on the upper side of the soap. OE course upon releasing said pressure the springs will move the soap upward/and out of the water. When it is desired to clean the cup, the valves 12 13 may be moved to open the ports 14 and 15, and
the water Will pass out through said ports,
and fresh water maybe poured in at the top, which by running through the cup will thoroughly cleanse it.
By normally holding the soap out of con-- Having thus described my invention, 1
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A mug or cup, a perforated plate therein, springs supporting said plate, the said cup having a valve-controlled opening, and a pan in which the lower portion of the mug or cup is removably seated.
2. Acup having au opening or openings in its bottom, slide-valves for controlling said openings, a stem extended outward from the valves through the opening in the wall of the cup, a perforated plate in the cup, springs supporting said plate from the bottom of the cup, and a pan in Which the lower portion of the cup may be seated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two'subscribing Witnesses.
