Be it known that I, EDWARD B. HoUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooches, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to brooches designed to accommodate miniatures, cameos, and analogous ornaments. Its primary purpose is to secure convenient access without involving disfigurement. An additional aim is to devise a structure which may be formed in rolled-gold plate without exposure of the basemetal portions after the parts are finally adjusted.

In cheap jewelry the popular method of construction involves the bending of the raw edge of the bezel over the brooch-body, and frequently the bezel is provided with radial prongs, which when engaged or released from the brooch-body in the exchange of miniatures not only defaces the brooch, but invites entanglement with adjacent fabrics.

The ends sought are attained by my new structure hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherem Figure l is a face View of my complete brooch; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same on lineman of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a face view of the separable member; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the same, showing the brooch-body in broken lines; Fig. 5, a vertical section of the same,together with its contents; and Fig. 6 a plan view of the bottom of the same.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.

My new brooch comprises a body portion A, to the back of which is joined the customary joint Ct, pin h, and catch 0. The bodyface is provided with a vertical flange (1, adapted to frictionally engage the separable member B. The latter is composed of a basemetal wall 6, having a beveled edge 2' and to whose exterior is fixed a gold band m, partially enveloping the wall, with its edge forming an external shoulder 12. The band m has an inturned flange n, which bears upon the display glass or stone 0. At intervals the wall 2 is broken by integral inbent tongues 7',

adapted to retain against displacement the article displayed. In the drawings these tongues bear upon a retaining-ring s, which rests upon a miniature it under the glass 0; but it is obvious, however, that the ring 8 mayin many instances be omitted, and when a cameo is used of course the glass 0 is dispensed with. Vhen the brooch is made shallow, even the tongues may be dispensed with. The ornament is placed in the member B, as indicated, and the wall of the latter is frictionally inserted into the vertical flange d of the body, such engagement being facilitated by the beveled edge 2'. The shoulder 19 closely abuts against the edge of the fine-metal flange d, presenting an apparently continuous surface of gold. The member B may be manually removed whenever it is desired to change the miniature or ornament without any defacement of the parts or labor.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a brooch, the combination with a body and a pin mounted thereon, of an upright flange thereon, and a separable member frictionally engageable with said flange, and a band on said separable member abutting against said flange.

2. In a brooch, the combination withabody and a pin mounted thereon, of an upright flange thereon adapted to receive a separable member, a separable member frictionally engaged within and by said flange, a band embracing the outer end of said separable member and abutting against the flange of the body and means upon the separable member for guiding the latter into engagement.

3. In a brooch, the combination with a body and a pin mounted thereon, of an upright flange thereon adapted to receive a separable member, a separable member frictionally engaged within and by said flange, an ornamental band embracing the outer end of said memberand abutting against said flange, and a bevel upon the edge of the separable member for guiding the latter into engagement.

In a brooch, the combination with a body and a pin mounted thereon, of an upright flange thereon adapted to receive a separable member, a separable member comprising an exterior rim, a base-metal Wall Within the rim and projecting therefrom, said wallbeing frictionally engaged within the upright flange, and said flange abutting against the edge of the wall.

5. In a brooch, a body having an upright flange, a separable member frictionally engaged within said flange, an ornamental band embracing the outer edge of said member and having an inturned flange, and means within said member acting in opposition to said flange for retaining an article between them.

6. In a brooch, a body having an upright flange, a separable member frictionally engaged within said flange and havinginwardlyprojecting tongues, and a band sleeved upon the outer end of said member and adapted to abut against said flange and formed with an intnrned flange acting in opposition to said EDWARD B. I-IOUGH.
