Description
UNITED STATES Patented May 19, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
SIZING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 728,697, dated May 19, 1903.
I Application filed February 27,1903. Serial No. 145,420. (No specimens.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. FREDEN- BURGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Composition of Matter to be Used for Sizing Yarn or Thread as it is Twisted and Polished on Thread Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
My composition of matter consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: water substantially pure, forty gallons; potato-starch, seventeen pounds; oxid of tin, one-half pound; oxid of zinc, one-half pound.
The above ingredients are steamed until they thicken and bubble, after which the following proportions of ingredients are mixed with the said proportion of parts: wood-a1- cohol, one-half pint; naphtha, one-half pint; caustic soda of one and one-half degrees of strength, one-half pint.
The proportion of wood-alcohol is mixed with the first proportion of parts for one minute. The proportion of naphtha is then mixed with the first proportion of parts and wood-alcohol for two minutes, after which the proportion of caustic soda is mixed with the first proportion of parts, wood-a1coho1,and naphtha for one minute. The yarn or thread to be sized by this composition of matter is of a dull-gray color and contains a certain percentage of dye, so that in the use of this mixture the sizing emulsion acts upon and softens up the dye in the thread and brings out a jet-black color.
This invention is adapted for use on the thread,- dressing machine shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 702,786, issued to me June 17, 1902.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. The herein described composition of matter, consisting of water, potato-starch, oxid of tin, oxid of zinc, said parts mixed with wood-alcohol, naphtha, and caustic soda, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described composition of matter for dyeing yarn or thread, consisting of pure water forty gallons, potato-starch seventeen pounds, oxid of tin one half pound, oxid of zinc one-half pound, said ingredients steamed and mixed with wood-alcohol onehalf pint, naphtha one-half pint, and caustic soda one-half pint, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. FREDENBURGH. Witnesses:
ELMER WALKER, DANIEL E. LOOKE.
