GRADING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,163, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed October 30,1902. Serial No- 129343- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. Eons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delavan, in the county of :Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inGrading-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a grader,
and has for its object a grader and roller attached for operative connection with a suitable body.
A further object of the invention is the provision of mechanism for raising or lowering said grader or shifting it, as may be desired.
The invention comprises details hereinafter more specifically set out, and illustrated" in the drawings, forming a part of this specijfi cation, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of myLimprove-I' ment as attached to a traction-enginefth'e' outline of the engine shown only, the f rollerin section and parts ofthegrader mechanism in dotted lines. The object of this inventionfis to utilize a traction-engine for the purpose of grading and leveling roads, &c., which is accomplished by attaching to the same grading and leveling mechanism, andinthe drawings, hereinafter described, is shown a suitable grader bearing in diagonal lines to the boiler and between the front and rear wheels, and coupled to the rear of the machine is a roller, and devices are provided for operating the grader; but it is to be understood that in the application of the grader and roller mechanism I do not want to be confined to such arrangement and construction, as various changes must be made in its use upon the various machines, and details may be resorted to without departing'from the spirit of invention and object aimed at herein.
The traction and its ground-wheels are shown throughout the drawings in dotted lines only, as itfor'ms the support for my attachment, and any form or style of engine may be used, anditjis not thought necessary to go into detail thereof or show same in full lines.

7 designates. a grading-blade of suitable form bearing in oblique lines to the body of the engine-boiler, and between the front and rear wheels thereofj the same is attached to or supported by a frame 8, having its pivotal or bearing point at9, with rear extensions 10 attached to the blade, and lla'epresents supplemental'braces attached to the blade and to the extensions l Oof the frame 8.
12 designates rods capable of being partially rotated or rocked in their bearings, which said bearings are designated as 13, secured to the boiler and actuated by mechanism supported in standards 14, supported on the platform, as shown. The rods have lateral extensions 15, having a pivotal relation at 16 with rods 17, which said rods at their lower ends are attached to or connected with plates 18, in turn secured to the gradingblade 7. The function of the rods 12 is apparent when the same are actuated for raising or lowering either of the ends of the blade either side or raised straight up from the ground. The worm and worm-Wheel arrangement provides a mechanism that is powerful and also provides for locking the position of the rods 12 as they are rocked for the purposes herein.
I have provided for shifting the blade sidewise, as might be found necessaryin the practical operation of the device, which comprises a frame 22, carried upon supports 23 from the boiler, and the said frame 22 is provided with a series of perforations 2a in its body, as shown, and designed to have connection with said perforations is a reach 25, the lower end of which is connected to or attached with one of the extensions 10 of the frame 8. By the arrangement of these parts as shown and described the blade may be raised or lowered without cramping the parts just described, as the reach has a pivotal connection at both ends, and the blade may be shifted laterally by changing the position of the upper end of the reach to connect with either of the openings or perforations in the frame 22, all of which, it is believed, will be readily understood. I have shown this simple but effective way of shifting the blade and retaining it in such positions; but other and various forms of devices may be employed that will be just as efiective. For instance, I may employ suitable gearing and a rack-and-pinion connection with this frame to be operated bya handwheel from the platform of the engine, all of which will come within the scope of this invention.
Referring now to the rolling device, 26 indicates a roller of a metal cylinder, having head portions 27 suitably attached for closing the ends of the cylinder, and each is provided with tubular bearings 28, as shown. The roller has suitable connection with the platform of the engine and follows in the Wake of the engine, as shown in Fig. 1, and in width overlaps slightly the inner edges of the traction-wheels 3. This roller is designed to serve as a water-tank and is filled with water, not only adding additional Weight to the roller, but makes it comparatively easy for handling the Water to be fed to the boiler of the engine. It is designed to feed the roller with water through a tap 29, having screw connection with one of the tubular bearings, and the feed-pipe from the roller is designated as 30, passing through a bushing carried in the opposite tubular bearing, and has a right-angle extension 31 reaching down to the lowermost portion of the roller, and 32 is an extension from the feed 30, leading in a suitable manner to the boiler. The roller supports a bin 33, serving as a tender for hauling coal, which adds additional weight to the roller and provides a means by which the weight of the roller may be varied by adding to the supply in the bin or taking away therefrom, as may be desired. Thus it will be seen the grading and roller attachments are applied for operative connection with a traction-engine and may be conveniently handled by an operator, and the location of the parts is such that the engine may turn in a very short radius.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A grader comprising a suitable bodyframe, a grading-blade pivotally connected with the body-frame, cranked rods also carried by said frame, connections between the rods and the blade, and means for operating the cranked rods and thereby raising and lowering the grading-blade, substantially as de' scribed.
2. A grader comprising a suitable bodyframe, a gradingblade, rods journaled in suitable supports and arranged to be rocked, their forward ends connected with liftingrods attached to the grader, on their rear ends carrying gears meshing with means actuated by hand-Wheels, substantially as described.
3. A grader comprising a suitable bodyframe, a grading-blade, rods journaled in suitable supports and arranged to be rocked, their forward ends connected with liftingrods attached to the grader, on their rear ends carrying gears meshing with means actuated by hand-wheels, and means for shifting the grader laterally, substantially as described.
4. A grader comprising a suitable bodyframe, a grading-blade, devices supporting said blade adapted to be rocked, a reach attached one end to the blade and having its opposite end connected to means supported by the body-frame adapting the blade to be shifted sidewise and retained in such shifted position, substantially as described.
5. A grader comprising a suitable bodyframe, a grading-blade pivotallyconnected with the body-frame, cranked rods also carried by said frame, connections between the rods and the blade, worm and worm-wheel gearing for actuating the cranked rods, and devices for shifting the blade sidewise, substantially as described.
