SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,7 61, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed April 11, 1891.
T (0Z7, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. RUGGLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mania tique, in the county of Schoolcraft and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Snow-Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snow-plows; and it has for its object to provide adevice of this class which shall be simple in construction and efficient in operation, in which the moldboard of the plow maybe adjusted vertically while the device is in operation, and in which the draft shall be attached in rear of the plow, thus giving the draft-animals a smooth track and preventing them from packing the snow in advance of the plow.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a snow-plow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the front sled on the line 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the rear sled on the line it in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 and 2 designate, respectively, the front and rear sleds, each of which is composed of runners 3 3, shod with half-round iron, as shown at 4, so as to cause the said sleds to run steadily and without sluing. The runners 3 3 of each sled are connected by a crosspiece 5,.aud the said cross-pieces of the front and rear sleds support the bolsters 6 and 7, which are connected with the sleds bymeans of king'bolts to permit the sleds 0r bobs to turn for the purpose of guiding the machine.

Said reach-bar is preferably attached securely to the rear bolster 7. The front bolster has an upwardly-extending screw-threaded rod 10, which may form an upward extension of Serial No. 388,510. the king-bolt, and said bolster is also provided with upwardly-extending guide-pins 11, said screw-threaded rod and guide-pins being extended through perforations 12 in the reach-bar. The latter is provided at its sides with flanges 13, which at the front and rear ends of the reach-bar are provided with covering-plates 1i and 15, thus forming at the front and rear ends of said reach-bar box like compartments, designated, respectively, by 16 and 17. The screw-threaded rod 10, which extends through the front compartment 16, is provided within the latter with a nut 18, which is provided with teeth or sprockets 19. At the rear end of the reach-bar is journaled a vertical shaft 20, which extends through the rear compartment 17 and is provided with a sprocket-wheel 21, which is connected by a chain 22 with the sprocket-nut 18 upon the screw-threaded rodlO. The shaft 20 is provided at its upper end with a hand- Wheel 23, by means of which it may be manipulated, thus turning the nut 18 upon the rod 10 and raising or lowering the front end of the reach, which is supported by said nut upon the screw-threaded rod 10. The guidepins 11 serve to insure steadiness of motion of the reach-bar while thus being adjusted, and also to keep it from tilting when the machine is in operation.
2i designates the plow-shovel or moldboard, which is suitably attached to the front end of the reach-bar, so as to be capable of being vertically adjusted with the latter. Said shovel or mold-board has a central ridge to cut into the snow and to deflect it to both sides over the wings or sides 26. The said wings are provided at their upper rear edges with hinged auxiliary wings 27, which are provided with ad justing-bars 28, adapted to be connected adjustably with the reachbar, thus retaining the said auxiliary wings securely in any position to which they may be adjusted.
The reach-bar is provided at its rear end with a platform 29, supporting the brackets or bearings 30, in which is journaled a shaft 31, carrying a drum or cylinder 32 and having a hand-wheel 33, by means of which it may be operated. To thedrum 32 are attached the chains 3% and 35, which are carried oversuitable guides to the front and rear sleds, to the cross-bars 5 of which the ends of said chains are secured. The chains are arranged in pairs, and the outer ends of each pair are connected to the ends of the crossbars 5, while the inner ends of each pair of chains are oppositely wound on the drum or cylinder 32. It will be seen that by rotating the shaft 31 the said sleds may be adjusted to guide the plow in any desired direction.
A whiffletree 36 for the attachment of the draft is pivoted to the under side of the reachbar directly in front of the rear sled, and a neck-yoke 37 is likewise arranged in rear of the front sled. The draft-animals will thus be attached between the sleds, thus pushing the front sled and pulling the rear sled. A seat for the operator may be mounted upon the platform 29, thus placing him in a convenient position to drive as well as .to guide the sled and to manipulate the hand-wheel, by means of which the front end of the reachbar carrying the plow may be vertically adjusted.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The construc tion is simple and inexpensive, and my improved snow-plow will be found to be exceedingly efficient in operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a snow-plow, the combination of the front and rear sleds, the reach-bar connecting said sleds and carrying the shovel or moldboard at its front end, and means for vertically adjusting the front end of said reachbar, substantially as set forth.
2. In a snow-plow, the combination of the front and rear sleds, the bolsters mounted pivotally upon said sleds, the reach-bar supported upon said bolsters, the screw-threaded rod and the guide-pins extending from the front bolster through openings in the reachbar, a nut mounted upon the screw-threaded rod and supporting said reach-bar, and means for manipulating said nut, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the front and rear sleds, the reach-bar, a screw-threaded rod ex tending upwardly from the front sled through the reach-bar, and a nut upon the said rod supporting the said reach-bar, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the. front and rear sleds, the reach-bar, the screw-threaded rod extending upwardly from the front sled and through the reach-bar, a nut upon the said rod supporting the reach-bar and having circumferentially-arranged teeth or sprockets, a shaft journaled near the rear end of the reach-bar and having a hand-wheel and a sprocket-wheel, and a chain connecting the latter with the sprocket-nut upon the screw.

5. The combination of the front, and rear sleds, the reach-bar having flanges provided with covering-plates, forming compartments or chambers at the front and rear ends of said reach-bar, a screw-threaded rod extending upwardly from the front sled, a sprocket-nut mounted upon said screw-threaded rod within the front compartment of the reach-bar, and a chain connecting said sprocket-nut with a sprocket-wheel upon a shaft near the rear end of the reach-bar, substantially as set forth.
6. In a snow-plow, the combination of the front and rear sleds, the pivoted bolsters, the reach-bar supported upon the latter, a drum journaled in. suitable brackets or bearings upon the reach-bar, and chains attached to said drum, passing over suitable guides, and having their ends connected with the sleds, which may thus be guided, substantially as set forth.
7. In a snow-plow, the combination of the front and rear sleds, the reach-bar mounted permanently upon the rear sled and having its front end connected vertically adjustably with the front sled, and the shovel or moldboard secured at the front end of the reachbar and having the central longitudinal ridge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
