To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs'ST EBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in NewYork, borough of Bronx, and State of New York, have vinvented certain new and useful Imrovements in Heads for Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved head for bottle-stoppers of that class which are known as lightning stoppers and which are employed in the bottling of beer, carbonated waters, and other beverages; and the object of the invention is to construct the head of the bottle-stopper in" such a manner that it can be readily engaged by the forked shoe of a bottle-fillinglmachine and lifted, with the closing mechanisms, away from the head of the bottle to permit the filling of the same by the carbonated beverage, after which the head may be returned to the bottle-mouth,
so that the locking-lever can be swungdown and the stopper lockedin position.
For this purpose the invention consists of a bottle-stopper head which is made of one integral piece provided with a disk-shaped main portion, a headed shank below said main portion for receiving the rubber packing, and a circular button-shaped portion above said main portion and connected therewith by a perforated shank elongated in the direction at right angles to the axis of the perforation thereof, said shank forming,with said buttonshaped portion, abrupt diametrical undercuts at the ends of the perforation, as will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.

pivoted. To the eyes C of the locking-lever C are applied the inwardly-bent lower ends of a U-shaped bail D, which carries the stopper-headE, said bail being passed through an opening in the upper part of the head in the well-known manner in bottle-stoppers of this class.
The head E of the bottle-stopper is made of one integral'casting and is provided with a disk-shaped main portion 6, and a headed shank ebelow the-same, to which the rubber packing F is applied in the usual manner, said packing extending over the headed shank and being provided'with arimf, that is seated on the bottle-mouth andtightlypressed on the same by the main portion 6 of the head E, so as to keep the bottle tightly closed when the stopper is in closed position. Above the main portion 6 is arranged a cap or buttonshaped portion e which is connected with the main portion 6 by a shank e elliptical in cross-section, which-is connected with the main portion and the'button-shaped portion.

The button-shaped portion is preferably made circular, so as to be concentric'with the disk-shaped main portion, the circular shape imparting a neat and ornamental appearance to the head of the stopper in addition to the function of the undercuts or projections by which the stopper-head is taken hold of by the forked shoe of the bottle-filling machine when filling the bottle. For this purpose the bottle is placed in the bottle-filling machine with the stopper-closing mechanism in unlocked position. The shoe engages then the undercut portion of the stopper-head and moves it sidewise into position shown in Fig. 3, so that the liquid-supply tube can discharge the beverage into the bottle. As soon as the bottle is filled the shoe moves the stopper back again concentrically with the bottle and in downward direction on the bottlemouth, which is then closed by the locking device of the stopper.
The bottle-stoppers with my improved head are specially intended for use with bottles in which carbonated beverages are charged, as in this case it is necessary to produce the quick closing of the stopper-head, so as to retain as much of the carbonic-acid gas as possible in the bottle. The metallic head of the bottle-stopper may be finished by nickel or other suitable plating or by euameling the same, so that the appearance is improved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 A head for bottle-stoppers, consisting of a disk-shaped main portion, a headed shank below the same, a circular button-shaped portion above said main portion, and an elongated shank between the main portion and the button-shaped portion, said shank being provided with a transverse perforation at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the elongated shank and forming with the button-shaped portion undercuts at the sides and ends of the perforation, substantially as set forth.
