STRAINER FOR SINKS. A
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent NO. 728,059, dated May 12, 1903.
Application tiled July 24, 1902. Serial No. 116.787. (No model.)
Tov all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ELLEN E. VVEED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, haveV invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Strainers for Sinks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the ordinary strainer located at the lmouth of the Wastepipe of a sink; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which may be easily and conveniently cleaned at all times and also easily and conveniently removed or detached, so as to at'- ford access to the waste-pipe for cleaning or other purposes; and with these and other objects in View the invention consists of a strainerfor sinks constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. Y
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a top plan View of my improved strainer detached from the sink; Fig. 2, a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l and showing the device applied to the bottoni of a sink.
In the drawings forming part of this specitication I have shown at a, the bottom of an ordinary kitchen or other sink, which is provided with an annular depressed portion a2, having an inwardly-directed annular flange or rim a3, which forms the opening a4 in the bottom of the sink. I have also shown at b the ordinary escape-pipe of the sink, and in the form of construction shown this pipe is provided at its upper end with an enlargement b2, having a flange` orurim b3, which is bolted, screwed, or otherwise secured to the bottom of the flange or rim a3, as clearly shown at b4 in the drawings.
In the practice of my invention I mount on the countersunk'ange or rim a3 at the bottom of the sink an annular plate cand which in the form of construction shown is secured to said dan ge or rim by screws c2; but this connection may be made in any desired manner. Above the annular plate c I place a strainerplate d, the top surface of which is Hush with the bottom surface ofl the sink, and the strainer-plate d is detachabl y connected with the annular plate c, and in order to accomplish this result I form in the strainer-plate d, near the .perimeter thereof, T-shaped slots d2 and connect with the annular plate c pins or other suitable devices d3, having oblong heads d4, which are adapted to pass through the heads of the T-slots d2, and when the strainer-plate d is turned the pisd3 enter the longer portion of the T-slots, as shown in Fig. l, and the strainer-plate d is detachably locked to the annular plate c. The strainer-plate d is provided with radial rows of perforations d5, and connected with the bottom of said plate centrally thereof by means of a pivot-pin e is a Yvalve-'plate c2, having radial slots or openings e3. The strainer-plate d is also prorvided with' afsegmental slotjd, and the valveplate c2 is provided with a corresponding pin e4, which passes through said segmental slot, and by means of the pin e4 the valve-plate e2 may be turned so that the radial slots eS therein will register with the perforations d5 in the plate d, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 2, or said valve-plate may be turned so that said slots will not register with said perforations, as is also indicated in Fig. 2.
The plates d and e2 are both circularin form, and the plate c2 is placed Within the annular plate c, and in practice the pin c4 is secured in the valve-plate e2, so that it will not become detached therefrom, or said pin may be formed integrally with said plate, and this is also true of the pins d3, which may be secured in or to the annular plate or be formed integrally therewith. As thus constructed it will be seen that the strainer-plate, with the valve-plate secured thereto, may be detached whenever desired for cleaning or other purposes or may be quickly and easily replaced in position whenever necessary;V
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by, Letters Patent, is N A sink, the bottom of which is provided with an escape-pipe opening around which is a countersunk annular flange or rim, an annular plate secured on said annular liange or IOO rim, n strainer-plate detachahly connected for operating the valveplate through the with said annular plate, and a Valve-plate strainer-plate,substantiallyas shown and deconnected With the bottom of the strainerscribed.
plate centrally thereof and Within said annu- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I5 5 lar plate, said valve-plate being provided with my invention I have signed my name, in presa. piu which passes upwardly through a segence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 23d mental slot formed in the strainerplate, said day of July, 1902.
valve-plate being also provided with perfora- ELLEN E. WEED.
tions or openings corresponding With similar ro perforations or openings in the strainer-plate and adapted to register therewith, and means lVitnesses:
