CHARLES x.1).4 BBAINERD, o 1? DANV'IDLE VERMONT. Letters Patent Na. 72,788, ate December- 31, 1867.
mrnoven BAeuoLDna TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I CHARLES D. BRAIrIERD, of Danville, jin the eounty of Caledonia, andState of Yermont, have invcnte'd a new and improved Bug-Holden" un d 1 do hereby'dcclare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact' description thereof, which will enable others-skilled in the art to malcera-nd usethel same, reference being.
had to the accompany-ing drawings, forming part'of this spe'cifieatbn.
The present invention consists, firs't, in anovel manner of hanging or arrangingftwo jawsor arms for hold'- ing the month of bugs open while being filled,l by means of which the said' -jaws Orarms can be drawn together or toward each other to admit of the month of the bag being easily placed upon and over them, as well as to accommodate bugs of- 'difi'er-ent widths, the jaws or arms when-released immediately springing apart, and thus tightly grasping and firmly holding the bag in its place or position; second, in a novel-'construction orarrangement ot' the bag-holder frame, whcreby it cau be adjustcd, and set to acco'mniodate bags of 'different lcngths. In the accompanying plate of drawings my mproved bag-holder isillustrate'd- Figure 1 being a view and-elevation of the holder from its'rcar side, and
` Figure 2 an elevatiou of one end. I i

A, in the drawings, represents the base or stand to the holder. a B, upright bars secured thereto', and braced by crossing stay-rods or bars C. In and between the uprightbars' B a frame, C2, is 'arranged to slideup and down, or in a vertical planc ,this frame being formed of side upright's, D,'braced`an'd joincd together by crossing stuy-rods', E. The edge F to one of thc uprig'hts D of the-frame Cgflis formcd with ratchet-toeth G, at suitable distances apart, with which a spring-level` pawl, H, hung to one of the bare-B of the main portion of'the bagholder, -is arrangcd to interlock, so as to enable the said frame C2 to-be sustained or supported'at various heights,
whether more or less great, as andfo'rl a purpose to be hereinafter described. Tothe inncr' edge of each of the side pieces of the frame Gz is'fastened a 'similar spring-band, L, -at one end, with its other loos e,iandv there provided with a curved or arc-shuped ja'w or arni, M. N,an'cye inveach of th e'fj'aws'M, to which are hung rods, O, hung to a common ring or 'loop, 'P,.t-hat,-^through a rod, Q, vi's' connected and hung to a 'tre'adle or lever, R, hung to the frame C, so as to move up and down in a vertical'plan'e. By pressing down upon the'treadle R, thejaws will-be drawn together or toward each other, when, removing the foot therefrom, the jaws, by the action of the spring-bands L, to' which they are fastened, will be 'immediately thrownv 'apart' or away from each other. T, pins, sharpcned at the ir points,` and inserted in 'the outerisi'de ofthe jaws or 'arms MQ U, a hopper, supported above the jaws M by and'upon a wireor other'vsuitable frame, V, that is fastened to the moving frame O. Having thus described the construction of my improved bag-holder, I will procecd to explain the manner in which the same is used. v
'i First, talre the month of the bag in hand, press upon the treadle R until the jaws M are drawn together sufliciently to admit of the bag-mouthbeng placed upon and between them; remove the foot from the said'treadle R, and the jaws immcdiately spring apart, fi'rruly binding the bag upon them, andthere holding it withits mouth open, the pins in thc-saidjaws piereing the sides of the bag, and cons'equ'ently acting to more `pcrfectly Secure it thcreon. Now release the pawl H from the teeth on the side to the frame 0, and raisve such frame until the bag is suspendcd Ebove the floorsufficicnt-ly, when, Secure' the frame by interlocking the' said pawl with the.
ratchet-tccth. Into the hopper then pour the grain or other material with which it is to be filled, or nearly so, when, from such hopper it will pass down into the bag through its open month, when, the bag having been suf'- ficiently fillerl', it is removed by lowering the frame Cl2 and prcssing down upon the treadle sufficiently to allow the jaws to bo re'adily released thercfrom.
Before raising the bag from the ground, by sliding the frame up the bag can bo partially-filled with the grain or other material, and, if a two-bushel bag, one bushel can be'putin while it is closcd, when, raising the bag suffieiently, the other bushel maybe poured into the same, it being rendered much easier by that mode.
What I claim as new, and dcsireito secure by Letters Patent, isi The combination of the spring-bands L, seeured at one end to the sliding frame 02,'jaws M, eyes N,^rods O and'Q, and trcadie R, all arranged and Operating as herein described, for the purpsc specified.
