Be it known that we, JOHN C. CRoMwELL and CARL W. A. KOELKEBECK, of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Blast-Furnace-Charging Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichio Figure 1 is a sectional sideelevation showing the top of a blast-furnace provided with our improved charging apparatus, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are similar views showing ainodified form.
i5 Our invention relates to the charging of blast-furnaces wherein a double hopper and bell system is used and is designed to provide improved means for distributing the stock within the lower hopper.
To that end the invention consists in providing between the two hoppers an annular' downwardly and inwardly inclineddeector upon which the stock is dischargedv by the upper bell. It also consists in certain constructions and arrangements hereinafter more clearly described, and set yforth in the claims.
In the drawings, referring to the form of Fig. 1, 2 represents the top plate of a blast- 3o furnace, 3 the main hopper,'^and 4 the closing-bell therefor. In this form we provide a surrounding casin g 5,which extends upwardly from the lower hopper and preferably converges upwardly and inwardly and carries the annular deflector 6. We have shown this funnel or deiiector as having an upper lianged member 7 secured between ange members 8 and 9 of the casing. The upper or supplemental hopper 10 is shown as supported at 4o the upper end of the casing and having a closing-bell 11, whose stem 12 is hollow to allow the stem 13 of thel lower bell to extend upwardly through it. The arrangement of the bells, with their actuating mechanism,
may, however, be widely varied within the scope of our invention. The funnel or de- Hector 6 is so arranged that when the upper bell is lowered the stool; slides therefrom and strikes upon the inwardly-inclined sides of the deiector. It then slides down the deiiecf 5o 'tor and is inwardly directed to and upon the lower bell. A good central distribution of the stock is .thus obtained within the lower hopper before charging it'into the furnace.
In Fig. 2 vwe show a form similar to that of 55 Fig. 1, except that the casing 5 extends inwardly to the lower endY of the deiector 6, the deliector thus constituting a part of the casing between the upper hopper 10u and the lower hopper 3a.
In Fig. 3 we show a form similar to that of Fig. 2, except that the deiector 6" is extended into an annular projecting portion 14 at its lower end, giving an inner overhanging portion extending beyond'the support.
, In Fig. 4 we show a form similar to that of, Fig. 2, except that two detlectors 6c are employed,ithe stock falling fromthe upper bell upon one deflector and thence sliding inwardly and downwardly to and upon thenext 7o detlector, where it is again distributed, and thence slides to and` upon thelower bell.
In Fig. 5 we show a form similar to that of Fig. 1, except that the lower portion of the deflector 6 is formed of segmental concave 75 plates 15, which are pivoted at their upper ends to the deiiector and are held in adjusted position by links 16, connecting them with screw-bolts 17, extending through hand-nuts 18, mounted in the casing. By turning the 8o hand-nuts the pivotal link connections will move the sections-in or out and adjust the degree of inclination of the lower part of the deiiector and then hold these plates in adj usted position. One point of advantage of this form is that in casethe furnace is working irregularly and itis hotter upon one side than the other the operator by adjusting the plates 15 so that they are more sharply inclined upon one side than upon the other can 9o change the distribution and feeding of thestock and remedythis uneven working. This facility for changingthe distribution of the stock 'during the working of the furnace we believe to be new and desire to cover the same broadly.
The advantages of our invention result from the use of the inwardly and downwardly converging deliector between the two bells, since an even and uniform distribution of stock is thus obtained, and, further, from the means for varying the inclination of parts of the defiector to vary the distribution as desired.
Many variations may be made in the form and arrangement of the hoppers and charging-bells, as well as that of the deflector and the means for supporting it, without departing from our invention.
Ve claiml. In blast-fumace-charging apparatus, an upper bell and hopper, a lower main bell and hopper, and a downwardly and inwardly nclined deileetor arranged to receive the stock from the upper hopper and deflectit inwardly upon the lower bell; substantially as described.
2. In blast-fumace-charging apparatus, a lower main hopper, a closing-bell therefor, an upper supplemental hopper, a closingbell therefor, a casing between the hoppers and a downwardly and inwardly converging funnel arranged to receive the stock from the upper bell and direct it toward the apex of the lower bell; substantially as described.
3. In blast-furnace-charging apparatus, a pair of hoppersin vertical alinement, closing bells therefor, a casing extending between the hoppers, and an inwardly and downwardly converging deflector supported upon the casing between the hoppers; substantially as described.

upper bell and hopper, a lower main bell and hopper, a downwardly and inwardly inclined deiiector arranged to receive the stock from the upper hopper, and connections for adjusting the inclination of at least a part of said deflector; substantially as described.
5. In blastfurnacecharging apparatus, a hopper, a closing-bell therefor, a defiector below the bell and arranged to receive the material therefrom, and connections for changing the inclination of at least a part of said deflectors; substantially as described.
6. In blast-furnace-charging apparatus, a hopper, a closing-bell therefor, an annular deflector below the bell and arranged to receve the stock` therefrom, said deiector having a pivoted extension and aconnection leading to the extension and arranged to adjust it and hold it in adjusted position; substantially as described.
7. In blast-furnace-charging apparatus, au upper bell and hopper, a lower bell and hopper, and a deector between the hoppers hav ing an annular series of pivoted extensions, said extensions having connections arranged to adjust their inclinations and clamp and hold them in adjusted position; substantially as described.
