QXL-BURNING REVERBERATORY FURNACE.
Specicationof Letters Patent. Application fue-d April 22,
Patented April 28, 1908.
1907. Serial No. 369,617.
`To qllwhom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE FRASER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toeka, in the county ol' Shawnee. and State ol' iansas, have invented certain new and useful Im roveinents inOil-Burning Revcrberatory maccs, oi' which the following is a specification. 'Y
My invention relates in general to i'urnaces, and more partitudarly to oil burning reverberatory furnaces.
The primary object of my invention is to provide :a reverberatory furnace in which crude oil or residuum may be successfully burned bv thoroughly mixing the sprayed. liquid fuel with an air blast in suitable quantities, reflecting and concentrating the generated heat to produce perfect. combustion, and discharging the gases in a state ol' pcrfect combustion into a working chamber, thereby resulting in a. high, uniform, and evenly distributed heat, l'ree l'rom violent drafts, throughout the entire working cham-V ber.
A furtherobject. of my invention is to prof- Vide'an oil 'burnimr reverberatory l'urnacc,
which will be simptie in cimstructtm, inexpensive in manufacture, and` eliicient in use.
The embodiment oi my invent-ion hcrein disclosed niay oe generally described as comprising an initial chamber, through o )cnings 1n the wall ot' which a plurality ol' mrners concentrioally extend, each'lairner comprismg inner and outer concentric tubes, an air Supply conduit communicating with tho outer burner tubes, an oil su plyconduit.
iiurner tubes, a bridge wall intermediate oi the initial Chamber and a working chamber, the top edge. of thc, bridge. wall being in the same, horizontal plane as the centers ot' the burners, openings leading into the. initial clnnnlwr adjacent the bottom thereof through which air is su iplicd, valves for regulating theI supply of oil to the burners, gates controlling the supply of air both to burners and to the lower openings, steam supply conduits communicating with the inner tubes ol' the burn ors, and' valves controlling thc supply of, steam to the burners.
Mv invention will be more' fully described hereinafter with rctcrencc to the accompanying drawings, in which thc saine is illustrated as embodied in aconvenicnt and practical form, and in which Figure lis a t'ront elevational view; Fig. 2, a central sectional view, showing one of the. burners on an enlarged scale; and Fier. 3, a vertical sectional viewon line, 3, 3, ig. 1., the surrounding wall being partially shown in elevation.
The sanie reference. characters are used to designate the salue parts in the several figurcs ot' the drawings.
Reference letter A indicates the housing of flanges a, a on thc adjacent sections. Q
B designates the trout of the housing, which is also preferably made in sections united by bolts extending through flanges vl). l) on thc adjacent sections, the front wall ol` thc housing being also united by bolt-s to the sidc walls A.
indicates the lire-brick liningof the ful'- nace, within which is formed an initial chamber lC and a. \\'orliing chamber l a bridge wall l) being provided intermediate of the said chambers. 'lhc initial cha mberEis -provided with au opening c leading thereto through which 'access may be had for the purpose of inspection. v l
j indicates one of the door vopenings leading to the working chamber for the introduction and removalof.v the material after being heated. Y
Extending horizont-idly through the front wall ot' thc tire-brickI lining are openings, such as indica-ted at Eand l.}2,'through which burners extend tothe interior of the initial chamber IC. Each ot the burners com rises an outer tube li' extending through tie corre.- sponi ling opening, but spaced apart therefrom to form an anun ar passageway, and an inner tu be h located concentrioally within the outer tube( A nozzleor con-ical cap i is secured ,around the inner end of the outer tube/H of' each burner, so as to torni a restricted annular passageway leading to the interior of the initial chamber around the central tube and a'ir supply conduit through which .air is forced at a suitable press-nre, as, for instance, about eight ounces. An air conduit G is. provided with branches it and G extending through opcningsin the furnace front to the interior o the initial chamber adjacent the bottom thereof. Gates g and g2 are rovided for controlling the passa e of air though such branched' conduits. he air su )ply conduitr y G is also'providcd with upwardly diverging a. furnace, which is preferably made in sec!4 tionsunited by bolts extending through 9; 'I esente branches'l-l, H2, which eoiiiiiiiiiiieate with the Outer-tubes U of the burners. (lates f'z, h2 are located in the branch conduits il, ll2 for controlling` the .passage of air therei 5 throiin'h.
K esigiiates le conduit through which oil is sup lied, preferably, at about thirty-live poun s pressure to loieel'he oil to the burnei's. At the lower end ol" the oil siipplg.Y con i() duit Ki provided si tiaiisi-*erse'coiidiiit le, the
4opposite ends-oll which are connected by suita e couplings K and l? with the inner tubes h of the burners.' The Vabres lc end k2 are provided for eoiitrollingthesupply ol" oil to 5 the'inner tubes ol the burners.
M designates a conduit through which Stettin is supplied li'oni any'suitiible source'.
m indicates a horizontally extending 0011- duitcornminicz-tting with the steam conduit M i and also' communicating, by suitable.
` 'eouplings, `with thel inner tubes 7i of the burn# is provided with a v'alve so as to peri nit water es'follows: Thel'vall'vescontrolling the' steam r conduits are closed and-the valves controlling 'fthe supply of oil openedto an extent suili 4steam supplyconduit.'r
.,ers, valves m', mzlbeing provided for control lin` the supply of steani to lthe burners.
e con uit M is shown continued doivii- -Wardly below the'liorizontal conduit in., land yof condensation to. beA drained from the The operation of my improved furnnce'is .lcient to supply the desired quantity ol oil.
The gates controlling the sir supply are also Sf'opened to an extent tov .permit the desired y1450 'ing lchain tlirongli the annular .openings around the burners also serves to keep the burners cool.
' :proportion of air tobe delivered tothe initial eheinber. The oil is spra ed :itV the burners and is mixed With thevvair 'scharged through V#the annular assage-Wa between. the inner nwand outer tu es of the urners The air is delivered to the `initial chamber through the ljbianch conduits G' and (i2-,strikes t ie in,Av 'tensely heated inclined face' of the bridve 'Wall D and isethereby heated and thoroughly iiiused, so es to be -mixed with the oil .',sprayed from the burners,"tliereby producing erlect combustion. i The gases insuch state of perfect combustion are discharged over the pper ede of thee-bridge Wall' intol the Workn er, tl'ierellvyl ,producing si high, uniform and ev'ely'dist'ri ute'd'lieet throughout the Working chamber, such heat beiiig-free nozzlesonl the'ends thereof. f The air induced When the supply oiFI oilend nir to the burners is discontinued, the valves are opened in I ,thev stearneonduit, so that steain will be dis- 5. charged through the inner tnbesof the buriiers, thereby preventing the liot interior 'firebrirl walls ol' lie l'urniice l'i'oin burning the ends ol. the burners.
., 'lf-reni the foregoing description, it will be observed that .l have' invented an improved criide .oil or residuui'n iiitiy be elliciently burned, and by'ineiins ol which thorough 'combustion is secured iiiid uiiiforin liest produced.throughout the working elianiber. l
Having non' ,fully dest-ri bed niy invention, what i claim :is new and desire -to secure by Letters Patent, is*- 1 l. ln an oil burningreverberatoryfurnace, the eoiiibinetion with ,an initial chamber, of
