Description

nith istne atwt ffirr.
ANDREW J. RYNER, or BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 72,757, dated December 31, 1867.
IMPROVED 'I'OBAGGO-GUTTBB.,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNL e it known that I, ANDREW J. RAYNER, of the city of Buifalo, county of Eric, and State of New'York, have invented a certain new and improved Tobacco-Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a transverse Vertical section. Figure II is a side elevation. Figure III is a top plan view. I The nature of this invention consists, first, in a tobaceocutting machine, which .may be used either fo1` dividing large plugs of tobacco, or for cutting the same fine for smoking, as may be desired, and hence i'sv a combined machine; second, in the construction and use of a guard origuidc-rail, attached to or forming part of the stationarymain frame of t'ne machine, and having the shape of a segment of a circle, the centre of' which is the fulcrum of the swinging cutter-frame, in combination with a hook or other projection upon the-said swinging frame, by which means the movement of the cutter-frame is gnided in a manner to insure the perpendieular descent of the knife upon the bed-plate.
In the accompanying drawings, letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A reprcsents the main frame of the machine, which is made of cast iron, and firmly eecured to the top of a table or c0unter.- a' represents a wooden bed-plate or feed-table upon the said main frame. B represents the cutter-frame, which is hinged to the main frame, as shown at b', and has upon one end ahand-lever or handle, C. D represents a curved guide-rail, which projeets upwardly from the muin'frame, opposite the fulcrum b', in the Shape of a quarter of a circle, having the said fulcrum as o. centre. A.l hook or other suitable projcctioniis formed upon one side of the frame B, which is shown at c'. This clasps the guide-rail D in a manner to .prevent the eutter-frame from moving sidewise, and insure a perpendicular deseent ofthe knife. E and F represent the knives. One of them,E, is screwed to the outer side of the cutter-frame in a slanting position, its Cutting-edge slightly projecting through a slot made longitudinaliy in the centre of the frame. It is made vertieally adjustable upon the frame, in order to enable the operator to set it for a thicker or thinner cut. vThis Vknife, E, is used for slicing or cutting tobaceo fine for the purpose of smoking in pip'es. The other knife, F, is firmly scre'wed or riveted to the inner side of the outter-frame, which is that nearest to the bed-plate or feed-table `a'. This knife is used for the purpose of dividing large plugs of tobacco into smaller pieees, which cannot be done by means of a tohacco-outtcr of common and now well-known construction.
My invention furnishes in one machine a means for both dividing plugs of tobacco into small pieces, and also for cutting them up fine for smoking-purposes-a combination which renders this machine the most con- I vcnient, cheap, and dcsirahle article of its kind for the purpose for which itis intended.
What I claim as my invention, and desir to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A tobacco-cutting machine, having two knives, E and F, upon one hinged cnttr-frame, B, arranged and Operating 'substantially as herein described and for purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the above, the guide-rail D, and the proj structed and Operating in themanner and for the pnrpose substantially as described.
ection C', upon the cutter-frame B, con- A. J. RAYNER.
