PATENT ()FFICE.
AUGUST G. BAUER,- OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Boo -MARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,572, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed July 1902. Serial No. 117,668. (No model.)
To all whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST G. BAUER,a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Book-Marks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of book-marks; and the object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of book-mark wherein are combined superior means for engaging the book-mark body with a leaf of a book and indicating the particular line on the page Where the reading is discontinued. This object I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an open book, showing my improved book-mark in engagement with one of the leaves of said.
book; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through said book-mark and the leaf engaged.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
My improved book-mark consists, as indicated in the drawings, of a T-shaped body 1, comprisinga comparatively narrow elongated strip or stem 2, having a transverse head 3. This head portion is, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, bent upon itself longitudinally to form a substantially hook termination 4:. The stem portion 2 is slidably connected with a shield-like body 5 by being passed through'npper and lower trans verse and parallel slits 6, formed in said shield. The upper and wider end of the shield or marker-body 5 presents a straight horizontal edge, as shown.
In utilizing the above-described book-mark the hook-like head thereof is caused to engage that leaf 7 of a book which is desired to be marked or indicated, the stem of the bookmark lying against the face of the leaf and between said leaf and the adjoining leaf when the book is closed. In order to mark a particular point or line on the book leaf or page, the shield 5 is moved upward or downward on the stem 2 until the upper straight side or edge of the shield isin alinement with or adjacent to the reading-line to be marked.
It will also be observed that the book-mark herein described is slidable laterally on the edge or end of the leaf, thereby permitting the marking or indicating of a certain word or words of a line. Itwill be observed that my improved book-mark is simple of construction and that the same is so formed that when it is connected with a leaf of a book no unsightly or undesirable projections from said book-leaves are produced.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a book-mark, the combination with a substantially T shaped body 1 comprising a straight stem portion 2 and transverse head 3, said head being bent to a hook form, of a marking-body 5 having parallel slits 6 adapted to receive said stem 2, said body 5 having a straight edge, substantially as specified.
AUGUST. G;TBAUER.
