PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. RIKER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS W. HOUCHIN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEWV YORK.
POWDER-G u N.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,449, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed March 19.1902. Serial No. 98,878. (No model.)
Tool/Z whmn it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. BIKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Powder-Guns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to powder-guns commonly employed for blowingpowder upon insects and vermin to exterminate the same and which may be employed for other purposes.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cylindrical sheet-metal body having one end fitted with a spring-actuated diaphragm of flexible material to produce a bellows action, the other end of the cylindrical body being provided with a removable cover. The upper or cover end of the body is made rounding and is provided with an adjacent flat portion terminating in an annular inward flange and the cover is made of sheet metal provided with an annular recess and is preferably of the same diameter as the cylindrical body, so that the flat rim of the cover overlaps the rounding portion of the body, thereby forming a small recess whereby the cover may be readily removed by the finger-nail or a suitable instrument.
The body of the powder-gun is preferably provided with a suitable projecting nozzle for discharging the powder.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a general ele-' shown in Fig. 3, by turning the edge of the rim 1) in against the flexible material, which, however, forms no part of my invention.
For protection and to prevent Wear the diaphragm of flexible material is centrally provided interiorly and exteriorly with metal disks d e, secured together and to the said material by a rivetf or other means, the disk at being provided with a peripheral flange 2. The upper end of the body a is rounding, as indicated at 3, extends inward in a flat adjacent surface, and terminates in an inward inclined annular flange 4.
The cover 7?. may be made of the same material as the body a and is provided with an exterior annular recess 5, the outer side of which corresponds in inclination with the flange 4 of the body and is made of the proper diameter to fit snugly within said flange. The diameter of the flat rim '5 of the cover It is preferably the same as that of the body a, so that the said rim overlaps the rounding portion 3 of the body, thereby forming a small recess 6 between these parts and providing, a means for easily removing the cover from the body, the finger-nail or a suitable instrument inserted in this recess accomplishing this end.
The diaphragm of flexible material is normally held in an extended position by the helical spring 7, extending from the upper part of the body to the disk (1, and the body may be conveniently provided with a project ing nozzle 8 for discharging the powder.
I claim as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a powder-gun comprising a cylindrical sheet-metal body and a delivery-nozzle projecting from the side thereof, aspring-actuated diaphragm of flexible material secured to one end of said body and closing the same, with the other end of said body made with a rounded edge or corner and an inward annular flange, and a cover having an annular portion to fit the flange of the body and a flat rim overlapping the rounded edge of the body, substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a powder-gun comprising a cylindrical sheet-metal body and a delivery-nozzle projecting from the side thereof, aspring-actuated diaphragm of flexible material secured to one end of said body and closing the same, with the other in diameter with the said b0dy,substantia1ly end of said body made with a rounded edge as specified. or corner, a flat adjacent surface and an ad- Signed by me this 30th day of January, jacent inward inclined annular flange, and a 1902. circular sheet-metal cover having an annular CHAS. B. BIKER. tapering portion to fit the flange of the body WVitnesses:
and a fiat rim overlapping the rounded edge GEO. T. PINCKNEY,
0f the body, the said circular cover agreeing BERTHA M. ALLEN.
