COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 727,312, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed January 27, 1903. -Serial Hal 10,709. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Comb, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in toilet or hair combs, an object being to provide a comb of simple and inexpensive construction having a liquid holder and distributer, so that while in use water, hair-dye, hairtonic, or other liquid may be applied to the hair.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
I will describe a comb embodying my in-,
vention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a comb embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line a; a; of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the teeth of the comb, and 2 is the back, which is hollow to form a reservoir for liquid. The
back of this part 2 is preferably flattened, as
at 3, so that the comb may be supported with the teeth upward, preventing theescape of" liquid when the comb is not in use. At the ends of the reservoir are tubular projections 4, engaged by screw-caps 5, and for the purpose of admitting air to cause the outflow of liquid one of the caps 5 is provided with a vent 6, designed, to be placed in register with a vent-hole 7in the projection 4. These openings may be placed in register by moving the cap 5 slightly outward, as indicated in Fig. 2. It may be here stated that while I have shown projections and caps at both ends I do not limit my invention to such construction, as it is obvious that they need be placed at one end only. The tubular projections provide a means for filling the reservoir and also for emptying and cleaning the same. At the upper or base ends of the teeth is a projection 8, which extends a'shortdistance into the reservoiiy'and at one side this projection has a series of perforations 9, designed for the passage of liquid to channels 10, formed in the edges of the comb-teeth. The projection 8 at the side of the perforations 9 is provided with a longitudinal opening 11, in which a cut-off valve 12 is mounted to slide, one end being extended outward through an opening in the end wall of the back 2, and this outer end is provided with a finger-piece 13. The cut-off or valve-plate 12 is provided with a series of perforations 14, corresponding in number to the perforations 9 and of course to the channels 10. When this plate 12 is moved to place its perforations in register with the perforations 9, obvious ly liquid may pass out through said perforations into the channels 10 and will run by capillary attraction along said channels to the plate. When the plate ismoved to place its perforations betweenthe perforations 9, it is obvious the outflow of liquid will be stopped or prevented.
The backv 2 is preferably rounded or cylindrical and has no projections liable to catch in a persons hair.
The device is simple in its construction and may be made and sold for a comparatively small price.
lVhile I have shown the perforated plate 12 for regulatingthe cutting off or outflow of liquid, it is obvious that other forms of cutoff valves may be employed without departing from thespirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, 1'
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cornb comprising teeth, having exterior channels, a hollow back for the comb, the said back being transversely rounded from the base of the teeth, a projection from the base portion of the teeth extended into said hollow back, the said projection having a longitudinal opening, and also having perforations through which liquid from the hollow back may pass, the said perforations being arranged to register with the channels in the teeth, and a perforated plate movable in said longitudinal opening.
2. A comb comprising teeth, a cylindrical tubular back on the teeth, said back having name to this specification in the presence of a flattened portion whereby the teeth may be two subscribing Witnesses. held with their points upward by placing said flattened portion on a support, the said back THOMAS DOUGLAS 5 having outlets for directing liquid to the Witnesses:
teeth, and means for controlling said outlets. J NO. M. BITTER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my C. R. FERGUSON.
