SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,226, dated May 5, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARL JOHN SUNDsrRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes and Covers 'lherefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The objects of this invention are to reduce the cost of construction, provide a box of neater and more sightlyappearanceand finish, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to, hereinafter in connection with the description of the working parts.

The invention consists in the improved packing or storing box or case and in the arran gements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim. g

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is a side elevation of my newlyconstructed case. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections of the same, taken through the longer and shorter axes of the box, respectively. Fig. 5 is a plan of the case; and Fig. 6 is a pattern of a side veneer, showing the method and manner of construction more fully.

In constructing either the cover or bottom of the box, or both said parts, I proceed substantially as follows: I provide three or more sheets of veneer of about a length sufficient to extend'around the four sides of the box and overlap more or less where the meeting ends are brought together. They are of a width somewhat greater than the height of the finished box or box portion. A suitable block or core-piece is provided of the desired These size and shape to serve as a form over which the veneer is bent, and clamps are also provided to hold the veneersin shape or position after bending. Hot glue is also conveniently at hand, which is applied to the surface of the veneers, which latter is then bent around the block one piece after the other and then all together, the ends of the veneers being preferably beveled to prevent the formation of shoulders or irregularity of surface. The plurality of plies efg of veneer'of, say, onetwentieth of an inch in thickness, having thus been glued and applied one to another and having been pressed and fastened closely around the form, the vertical corners being rounded convexly, as viewed in plan in Fig. 5,while the glue is still hot and the plies loose from one another, the upper edges 0 of the veneers are quickly cut at the corners and then roughly cut away, so thatV-shaped recesses d are formed, and the upper parts of the plies of veneer are together bent inwardly toward the centerof the cover over the rounded upper edge surfaces of the form and clamped down against the top of said form. After the glue has set and hardened the veneers are released from the form and a center piece it is inserted at the open center, bounded by the inwardly-turned edges or flanges of the side veneers. The corner edges forming the joints 2' are neatly cut, so that when again subjected to pressure over a form or suitable clamps the edges of the veneers will closely meet. Having been thus cut, the veneers are subjected to pressure and the parts of the veneer on opposite sides of the out are convexly bent, as shown in plan and side elevation, so that no sharp angles are formed. Then the box is again released and a lining, layer, or veneerj, with beveled edges 7c, is inserted between the inwardly-turned parts Z of the body-veneers e fg and the mold or clamp, and a top plate m of veneer is applied to the upper outer face of the said inwardly-turned parts and all again subjected to compression, glue having been first applied to the surfaces not already joined. The top plate and lining lie at opposite sides of the center piece or filling and overlap the inwardly-turned flanges of the side veneers and are glued to said fillingpiece and flanges, as above indicated. When the last application of glue is hard, and the mold clamps or presses Withdrawn, a construction is provided in which the corners are devoid of any an gnlarity, the rotundity of the vertical and horizontal side edges being continued at the corners. To secure the close joints and rotundity referred to, the borders of the V-shaped recesses 61, near the angles, are rounded convexly, as at n 'n, Fig. 6, and when closed together there is a gradual rounding at the corners in conformity to the rounding of the longitudinal curvatures. The construction being complete, the box is sandpapered, varnished, or finished in any suitable manner.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is l. The improved box cover herein described, comprising a plurality of sheets of veneer extending around the sides of the said cover and having their ends overlapping and beveled and glued together, the width of said sheets being greater than the height of said cover, the said sheets at the upper parts being split or out at the corners of the cover and bent inward toward the center of the cover, the inwardly-bent flanges of said cover being filled in by a center piece and held-in place by an overlapping top plate and an interior overlapping lining of veneer, said core-piece and overlapping top plate and lining being glued together and to the bent flanges, substantially as set forth.

2. The improved box cover herein described, comprising a plurality of sheets of Veneer, extending around the vertical sides of the said cover and having their ends joined together, the width of said sheets being greater than the height of said cover, the upper edges of said sheet being cut out at the corners and turned inward toward the center of the box, the sheets near the corner cuts being bent convexly to form roundings at the intersections of the sides, a center piece inserted within the space formed between the inwardly-turned edges of the sheets of veneer, and an overlapping top plate covering the center piece and the edges of the in wardlyturned veneer and an interior lining, substantially as set forth.
