ATENT HENRY VAN WIE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,036, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed August 9,1902. Serial No. 119,053. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY VAN WIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to sash fasteners orlocks, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple construction of fastener which will securely fasten the sash in either a raised or lowered position.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my invention, the fastener being arranged adjacent to the top of the lower sash for the purpose of looking the said sash ina closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, showing the position of the various elements when the fastener is locked. Fig. 3 is a plan elevation of the-fastener, the bolt being shownin an open or unlocked position, the keeper being shown in-section. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective, and Fig. 5 is a detail in section.
In carrying out my invention I employ a rightangle-shaped plate A, which is securely fastened to the upper member of the lower sash-frame, one member of the plate being fastened to the upper face of the sash, while the other memberis fastened to the front side of the sash, as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A barrel B is welded to the member A of the plate A, said barrel being slotted longitudinally, as shown at B, and this longitudinal slot has lateral notches or recesses B produced therein adjacent to its opposite ends. The bolt C slides within the barrel B and is provided with an operating knob or handle C and also with a pin or stud C which works in the longitudinal slot B and the locking-notches B D indicates a semicircular cap, which is arranged over the central portion of the barrel and completely covers the longitudinal slot and lateral notches, and this cap has its lower edge provided with lugs or spurs, which are passed through apertures in the member A of the plate A and are hammered down or riveted to securely lock the cap in position, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
A keeper E is fastened upon the side stile of the upper sash, said keeper-plate having an opening or a socket E, which receives the inner end of the bolt when the said bolt is projected forwardly for the purpose of looking the sash.
It is obvious that a series of keepers may be arranged upon the upper sash, so either sash may be securely locked in various open positions.
In order to operate the bolt, it is only necessary to give it a quarter-turn, slide the same backwardly and forwardly, and then give the bolt another quarter-turn, and it is securely fastened either in its locked or unlocked position.
It will thus be .seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap and simple construction of sash-fastener which can be quickly and easily operated and which entirely avoids the use of springs or other similar appliances.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
' A sash-fastener comprising a right-angular plate, one member of which has a barrel connected thereto, said barrel having a longitudinal slot provided with notches at its ends, a bolt working in the said barrel and having a laterally-projecting pin or stud, a cap encircling the barrel and inclosing the said slot and notches, said cap having lugs formed thereon by which it is secured to the plate and a keeper-plate having an aperture or socket adapted to receive the forward end of the bolt, for the purpose specified.
