FREDERIO W. HILLARD, OF TOTTENVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE ELLIOTT & HATCH BOOK TYPEWRITER COMPANY, OF N El/V YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
BOOK-TYPE -WRITER TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 726,921, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed August 3] 1901. Serial No. 74,015. (No model.)
ToaZZ whom it may concern: ed on fixed supportingbrackets b at the mid- Beitknown that I, FREDERIO W. HILLARD, dle of the back of the table-frame, so that a citizen of the United States of America, and they have fixedpivot-points. A book-rest E, a resident of Tottenville, in the county of which is of the-entire length of the table, is 5 Richmond, city and State of New York, have connected by means of hinges e at its front 5 invented certain new and useful Improveedge with the front bar or rail a at the top of ments in Book-Type-Writer Tables, of which the table-frame and may be operated to raise the following is a specification. or lower it by means of an adjusting mechan- The presentinvention relates to type-writer ism comprising a rotary shaft F, journaled [0 tables of the class adapted for book typetransversely of one end of the table-frame in writers, enabling the book to bespread open bearings fand provided with a hand-wheelf thereon and any page typewritten. atits forward end. The rear end of the shaft The objects of the invention are to provide F is provided with a worm g, which meshes a simple and convenient form of table for a with a worm-wheel g, fixed on a short longir5 platen which is mounted at a fixed pivottudinalshaftg ,journaledin bearings g ,pr0- point, the book-rest being adjustable relajecting from theunder side of the rear bar tively thereto; also, to so mount the bookor rail a at the top of the table-frame A. A rest as that in the writing position the bookpinion t is fixed on short shaft 9 and meshes rest is at the natural writing-level, and to prowith a downwardly-projecting rack I, fixed 2o vide means forsupporting that portion of the rigidly on the underside of the swinging rear book not being written upon at a lower level, portion ofthe book-rest E, causing by the roand to so construct the table as that the entary motion of the adjusting-shaft F the up tire adjustment for writing position in any or down movement 'and setting of the bookthickness of book may be accomplished with rest to desired position. Fig. 2 is an endelevation of the same, posed of a flat board E and side supports E 5 the writing instrumentalities being shown in suitably secured together and rigidly mountwriting position and the machine proper beed above the transverse opening or space 0, ing shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a formed'at the middle of the book-rest, so that front elevation of the table. 7 the ends or relatively lower portions of the Referring to the drawings, A indicates the book-rest may support that portion ,of the 0 table-frame; B, the writing-machine proper; book not being written upon-at a lower level B, the base-frame of the same, and O the than writing position. Therebyprovision is platen, all well known. I. 7 made for writing at the natural writing-level.
In a companion application filed contemand for supporting those portions of the book poraneously and now Patent No. 695,725, not being written on at a lower level. The
5 dated March 18, 1902, certain claims are made upper surfaces of the low end portions of the 5 covering one of the underlying features of book-rest and the upper surface of the fiat both inventions in so far as they both reside arch forming the platen-rest are parallel, so in the combination of a platen and a hinged that the covers of the book to be written in or pivoted book-rest. may lie flat upon either end portion of the 50 The base-frame B and platen C are pivotbook-rest and upon the relatively higher rest, Ioo
thereby disposing the leaf to be written upon in proper writing position over the rest E E IIaving placed the book in position, the platen is lowered, and then by turning the shaft F the book-rest is raised or lowered until the platen will lie fiat upon the portion of the book resting on the rest E E The leaf to be written on is now placed over the platen and the writing mechanism lowered into writing position.
A quick adjustment of the parts to writing position may be obtained by the described table, inasmuch as the platen swings on a fixed pivot-point, and the adjusting device for the book-rest is in convenient reach of the operator at the right-hand end of the front of the table.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a book-type-Writer table, a book-rest having end portions to support a half of the book and an intermediate raised arched book and platen-supporting rest, substantially as described.
2. In a book-type-writer table, a book-rest having a central transverse arched book and platen-supporting rest, substantially as described.
3. In a book-type-writer table, a book-rest havingarigidly fixed arched book and platensupporting rest, substantially as described.
4.. In a book-typewriter table, a hinged book-rest having a lower portion to support half of the book, and a relatively higher book and platen-supporting rest, substantially as described.
5. In a book-type-writer,table, a book-rest hinged at its front edge thereto, and having end portions to support a half of the book, an intermediate raised arched book and platensupporting rest, substantially as described.
6. In a book-type-writer table, the combination, with the hinged platen, of an independently-hinged book-rest having a lower portion to support half of the book and a relativel y higher book and platen-su pporting rest, substantially as described.
7. In a book-type-writer table, the combination, with the platen pivoted at the rear of the table, of a book-rest hinged to the front of the table, and having an arched book and platen-supporting rest, substantially as described.
8. In a book-type-writer table, the combination, with the swinging platen, pivoted at a fixed point, of a book-rest pivoted at a fixed point relatively to the platen and having a lower portion to support half of the book and a relatively higher book and platen-supporting rest, substantially as described.
9. In a book-type-writer, the combination, with the table-frame, of a book-rest hinged thereto and provided with a rack, of a wormgear adjusting device provided with a pinion meshing with the said rack, and a platen pivoted to the table independently of the hookrest, substantially as described.
Signed at New York this 21st day of August, 1901.
