To all whom it may concern.-

a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and-State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention hereinafter described and claimed has relation to buckles, and while my improved buckle will be useful for all of the Various purposes for which such an appliance is employed my invention is espe cially desirable as a buckle useful for mailcarriers and others desiring a buckle which will not make it necessary to employ a perforated strap.

The special object of my invention is to provide clamping means cooperating with the buckle-frame proper for engaging the free end of the strap and securely holding the same as adjusted and which will permit said end of the strap to be very quickly released and reengaged, as may be necessary.

Other objects and advantages will be here inafter made fully apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 shows my invention applied to use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my buckle complete separated from the strap. Fig. 3 is a central sectional View of my buckle and a contiguous portion of the strap cooperating therewith. Figs. 4 and 5 show two cooperating parts of my buckle separated from each other.

Referring to the numerals upon the drawings, 1 indicates a strap of any preferred character, one end of which is connected by sewing or by means ofa rivet 2 to the bar 3,

- which forms a part of the buckle-frame proper, 4, said frame being substantially rectangular in form, as shown in Fig. 4, and comprising at its outer or free end the jaw 5, having uponrits lower side a roughened surface or a plurality of corrugations, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, said corrugations being preferably longitudinally disposed with respect to the jaw and designed to more securely engage the free end of the strap without making it necessary to perforate said strap and employ Be it known that I, RoYL ANDREW BROWN,

a pivoted tongue to cooperate with said perforations, as is now common. The jaw-section 5is provided upon its inner edge with preferably two integral extensions or lips 6, which are of sufficient length to be curved slightly upward ,so as to engage and partly surround the inner edge ofthe lip or handle section 7 of the clamping-jaw 8, said handle-section being integrally formed with said clamping-j aw, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. It will be observed that the handle-section 7 is so shaped and joined to the frame-section 8 that it will have the link-sections 9, the said link-sections being designed to rest loosely between the contiguous part of the frame-section 4 and the lips 6, thereby insuring that by means of said lips the said auxiliary jaw 8 will not casually drop out or become disengaged from the main section 4. The free end of the jaw-section, as indicated by the numeral 10, is thus disposed adjacent to and parallel with the main jaw 5, and by entering the free end of the strap underneath the section 10, so that it will come up between saidsection and the jaw 5, said free end will be reliably engaged and securely clamped between said parts and prevented against casual withdrawal. The main jaw 5 is provided,- preferably, upon each end with the handle-sections 11 in order to facilitate the easy handling or control of the parts, thereby insuring that the main jaw may be slightly raised to permit the disengagement of the strap from between the parts 5 and 10.

By the arrangement which I have herein illustratedand described it will be observed that the auxiliary jaw Sis thus held pivoted to the outer end-of the frame-section and that when thestrap is interposed between the member 10 of said jaw and the main jaw or bar 5 the tendency will be to tightly draw the member 10 against the upper member 5, and thereby bind a contiguous portion of the strap and reliably hold the same against casual displacement. By theuse ofsaid clamping members the entire transverse section of both sides of the strap is very securely clamped or engaged, thus rendering it difficult to release the strap except by raising the main jaw 5 slightly by means of the handlesections 11 or the equivalent thereof.

It will be understood that various modifications and changes may be made in the construction which I have herein specifically set forth without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a buckle, the combination with a suitable main frame having upon one end an upwardly-inclined extension and also having inwardly-directed lips 6, of a cooperating frame pivoted to the end of the main frame through the mediation of said lips whereby a strap interposed between the free end of the pivoted frame and the main frame will be securely clamped, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein-described buckle comprising a suitable main frame provided at one end with an upwardly and outwardly inclined extension for manual control and also having inwardly-directed lips 6 combined with an auxiliary frame pivoted to the said main frame upon said lips whereby the auxiliary frame will be so disposed that the outer end thereof will lie parallel with the outer end of the main frame whereby a strap interposed between said ends will be securely engaged by said parallel ends, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a buckle a main frame having at one end suitable extensions at each corner for manual control, the end of the frame being provided with corrugations upon its under side, in combination with an auxiliary frame having its outer side adapted to cooperate with said corrugated end of the main frame; integral lips 6 carried by the main frame and adapted to engage a contiguous part of the auxiliary frame and hold said frames in combined relationship, all substantially asspccified and for the purpose set forth.

4. The herein-described buckle comprising a suitable main frame having upon one end a suitable extension and also provided with a pair of lips 6, in combination with an auxiliary frame adapted to have a portion thereof located in said lips whereby the outer ends of the main and auxiliary frames will be disposed substantially parallel with each other and permit a strap to be passed between the same whereby the strap will be securely clamped all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.

5. The herein-described buckle comprising a main frame having upon one end suitable extensions for manual control; curved inwardly-directed lips secured upon the inner side of that end of the main frame carrying said extensions, in combination with an auxiliary frame comprising the clamping-section 10 adapted to lie parallel with the contiguous end of the main frame, said auxiliary frame also being provided with an angular extension 7 and with means to engage said lips all substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
