Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. DRAPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,
like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
In present loom structures the shuttle when boxed is usually under considerable pressure between the binder and the opposite boxplate or wall of the shuttle-box, making any longitudinal movement of the shuttle more or less dicult. This resistance to longitudinal movement isincreased by the use of various forms of shuttle-checks which impart additional pressure to the binder, as well as by the use of leather or other friction-pro ducing material on the face ot' the binder.
In automatic looms of the Northrop type, such as shown in .United VStates Patent No. 529,940, the shuttle is provided with an inclined plate at the end provided with holding means for theV filling carrier or bobbin, the object of which plate is to cause movement ot the shuttle toward the mouth of the shuttlc-box if it is so far in that the base of the iilling-carrier strikes the incline at the time of lling transfer. At such time the lling- 'carrier is held from lengthwise movement by a ridge on the face of the transferrer which engages the endmost ring on the base of the lling-carrrier. When the shuttle is held by the checking means acting through the binder so tightly that the filling-carrier in transit cannot move the shuttle by striking onthe incline, the filling-carrier is dellected from the proper` horizontal position,
its tip being depressed, for it must move lengthwise if the shuttle does not, and in order to somove the 4base of the filling-carrier must slide under the ridge of the transferrer. This is almost certain to result in breaking the tilling-thread, and it is also liable to cause the tip of the filling-carrier to catch in the slot in the lay in the bottom of the shuttie-box.
My present invention has for its object the production of means for preventing such highly-objectionable occurrences, and to this end I have made provision for relieving the shuttle from binding pressure as transfer of filling is eiected. By so doing the shuttle can be moved readily into proper receptive position by the filling-carrier being transferredtherete, and lateral positioning of the shuttle is also permitted to a slight degree,
completely obviating the objections herein-V before referred to.
The various novel features of my invention will be described hereinafter in the subjoined specification and particularly pointed out in following claims.
Figurel is atransverse sectional view of a portion of a loom provided with automatic illing-replenishing mechanism, taken at the inner end of the filling-feeder on the line l 1, Fig. 2, with one embodiment of my present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the lay and shuttle-box at the replenishing side of the loom` and showing a part of the means for relieving the shuttle of bindingV pressure at the time of filling replenishment, and Fig; 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the bunter-carrying lever shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to Fig. l, the breast-beam A40, the stand A7, mounted thereon near one side of the loom and sustaining the feeder or hopper for the filling-carriers, the transferrer f', fulcrumed on the stud f, the controlling rockshat't d to govern the time of operation of the replenishing mechanism, and the lay A3, having a bunter C2 thereon to effect the operation of the replenishing mechanism at the proper time, may be and are all substantially as in United States Patent No. 529,940 and operate substantially as therein set forth.
The replenishing shuttle-box on the end of the lay adjacent the replenishing mechanism is shown in Fig. 2 and comprises a front box, plate, or wall Z9, top plate b', and back plate b2, and a binderB is fulcrumed at its outer end on the lay at bx and acted upon by a light spring B and also cooperating with an upturned binder-finger P on the usual protector-shaft P, governed by the spring PX.

it is subjected to the pressure of the checking-springsBX and PX, transmitted through the binder, as will be manifest to those skilled in the art, and heretofore this entire pressure of the checking means has been maintained during filling replenishment. At such time the transferrer f conveys a filling-carrier from the filling feeder or hopper to the shutlle, and, as has been previously pointed out, the transferrer is at times faulty, owing to the firmness with which the shuttle is held from movement in the shuttle-box.
I have provided means herein to relieve the shuttle of binding pressure at the time of filling replenishment, so that the shuttle can move slightly longitudinally or laterally, or both, to adapt itself properly to receive the incoming fllling-carrier. To this end I have fulcrumed a lever h h on the inner end of the stud f, the arm h of the lever projecting rearwardly and terminating in a tubular portion h2, and a longitudinal slot h3 is provided between such tubular portion and the fulcrum. A bunter, shown as a plunger 7c having a shoulder c',is slidably mounted in the tubular part of the lever, the front end of the plunger entering the slot h3 and hIa/ving secured v to it a stop-collarloX. A coiled spring SX surv so acts as a cushion to prevent undue shock.
'The front arm h of the lever is provided with a lateral pin h4, which enters a cam-slot d10 in an upturned arm made fast to the rock-shaft d' by a suitable set-screw 6, Fig. l, and preferably said arm is made longitudinally adjustable, the two parts d and d12 being adjustably connected by bolts 8.
Ordinarily the parts just described are in full-line position, Fig. l, and when the lay beats up the rear end ofthe bunter or plunger 7c passes over the top of the replenishing shuttle-box near its mouth. When the replenishing mechanism is to operate, however, the controlling rock-shaft d is turned in the Adirection of arrow 65, Fig. l, throwing the arm du Zw forward into dotted-line position,
and the slot-and-pin connection between the arm and the lever h h turns the latter on its fulcrum f into dotted-line operative position. Such depression of the rear end of the plunger 7c moves it into the path of movement of an offset extension 19X on the binder-finger P in the present embodiment of my invention, and as the lay beats'up the plunger will engage such extension, and the plunger will compress its spring SX until the latter is strong enough to overcome the force of the protectorspring PX and swing the binder-finger back away from the binder just before the fillingcarrier engages the shuttle. Thus the latter is relieved of the pressure due to the pro tector-spring PX and subjected only to the action of the light spring BX, which latter will not interfere with the adaptation of the shuttle to the incoming filling-carrier. The shuttle is not again subjected to the regular binder-pressure until the transfer of iilling has been effected and the lay has moved back far enough to release the binder-finger from the control of the bunter or plunger 7c.
Manifestly the bunter could be made rigid, if desired; but by yieldingly mounting or cushioning the same I prevent undue shock or jar when it operates. By adjusting the arm d C112 the rear end of the bunter can be madehigher or lower' when it is in operative position, according to the height of the shuttle-box or adjacent parts.
My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described in the practical embodiment thereof comprised herein, as the same may be modiied or rearranged in various details by those skilled in the'artwith'out departingfrom the spirit ands'cope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a loom provided with automatic filling-replenishing mechanism, the lay, shuttlechecking mechanism mounted thereon, and means mounted independently of the lay and operative upon filling replenishment to yieldingly act upon said shuttle-checking mechanism and reduce the pressure upon the shuttle due to such checking mechanism.
2. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle-box, a spring-controlled binder therefor, mechanism to replenish automatically the shuttle with filling, and means mounted independently of,
the lay to engage the binder and reduce the binder-pressure on the shuttle at the time of filling replenishment.
3. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle-box, a spring-controlled binder therefor, mechanism to replenish automatically the shuttle with filling, and means mounted independently of the lay and rendered operative by or through actuation of the replenishing mechanism to engage the binder and reduce the binderpressure on `the shuttle.
4. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle-box, protector mechanism, including a binder for the shuttle, mechanism to replenish automatically the shuttle with filling, and means mounted independently of the lay and operative at time of filling replenishment to relieve the shuttle from pressure due to the protector mechanism. l
5. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle-box, a binder, a cooperating spring controlled binder-finger, automatic filling-replenishing mechanism, and means mounted independently of the lay to yieldingly engage and retract the binder-finger from the binder at the timeof filling replenishment.
6. In a loom provided With automatic lilling-replenishing mechanism, a rock-shaft to control the time of its operation, shuttlechecking mechanism, and means directly connected with and governed by said controlling rock-shaft at the time of tilling replenishment to cooperate With the checking mechanism and reduce the pressure upon the shuttle.
'7. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle-box, a binder, a coperating spring-controlled binder iinger, automatic filling replenishing mechanism, and a yieldinglygoverned bunter mounted independently of the lay to cooperate with and vretract the binder-finger from the binder at the time of filling replenishment.
8. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle-box, means to yieldingly engage and check the shuttle when it enters the shuttle-boX,mech anism to replenish automatically the shuttle with filling when the shuttle is properly boxed, and means mounted independently of the lay and operative automatically at the time of filling replenishment to permit relatively free movement of the shuttle to adapt itself for the proper reception of the fresh filling.
9. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle-box, a binder, a coperating spring controlled binder-finger, automatic filling-replenishing mechanism, a normally inoperative, springcontrolled bunter mounted independently of the lay, and a connection between said bunter and the replenishing mechanism to move the bunter into position to engage and retract the binder-linger from the binder during illing replenishment. l

In a loom, a lay provided With a shuttlc-box, a shuttle to contain a supply of filling, shuttle -checking mechanism, filling-replenishing mechanism, including a transferrer, to provide the shuttle automatically With a fresh supply of filling, and means mounted independently of the lay to reduce the pressure of the checking mechanism upon the binder as the transferrer conveys a supply of filling to the shuttle.
