Description

PATENTED APR. 28, 1903.
0. GILLETTE... EYEGLASSES.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 13, 1902.
R0 MODEL.
- flanged plate, to which are connected the" UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
OSBORN GILLETTE, OF WOBURN, MASSACHUSETTS.
EYEGLASSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 726,281, dated April 28, 1903.
Application filed J 11119 1 2- Serial No. 111,486. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSBORN GILLETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woburn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Masssachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in eyeglasses; and the main object of my invention is the provision of a novel means for securing the bow and pad-supports to the glass frames so that they do not work loose, thus remedying the worse defect in the eyeglasses in general use.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an eyeglass which is very simple in construction and thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
To attain the desired objects, my invention consists of an eyeglass embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a" pair of eyeglasses constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the connecting means in use, Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the slotted end of the spring-bow or pad-support.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the bow-spring B and the pad-support 0. It is a diflicult problem to so secure these parts together that they will not in use become loos ened, and thereby annoy the user by falling." apart, and it has therefore been my intention to so form the connection at this point as to make a wedge in the flanged plate to cause all members to be forced together and by the forced contactmake a rigid connection. In order to accomplish this end, I employ the cone-shaped screw D, which is adapted to enter the alined openings E and F in the terminals of the bow-springand pad-support, and thus force the split ends G and H, respectively, of the bow-spring and pad-support I apart to securely contact the inner sides of the flanges J of the flanged plate A. By this construction it will be seen that not only does the screw assist in holding the parts together, but the cone-shaped portion forces these split ends apart and causes their outer sides to forcibly contact the flanges, so that a binding result is effected. These split ends are separated by means of a long slot K, which extends from the extreme end to a distancebeyond the opposite side of the opening.
so as to tightly contact both sides of the.
flanged plate or socket within which the ends are held and thus prevented from having any movement, which is the cause of the screw becoming loosein glasses of general construction.
What I claim as new is- 1. An eyeglass, comprising a bow-spring, a pad-supporting means, and a flanged plate, said bow-spring and pad-supporting means each being provided with a slot through one end of the bow-spring and pad-supporting means respectively, in combination with a screw for entering the slot and causing the ends to spread apart and impinge the flangeplate.
2. An eyeglass, comprising a flanged plate or socket, a bow-spring and a pad-support each having one end mounted in said plate, said spring and support each having aslot in the same end, a screw adapted to pass through the flanged plate and the slot of the bowspring and pad-support and cause the ends to spread apart and impinge the inner walls of the flanged plate.
3. A connection for eyeglasses, comprising a plate having flanged sides, a terminal fitting in said plate and provided with 'a slot therein, and a screwadapted to ,enter said slot of the terminal and force the sides of the terminal adjacent to the slotinto contact with the flanges of the plate.
4.. Aconnection for eyeglasses, comprising a plate having flanged sides, a terminal of a member fitting upon the plate between the flanges, said terminal being provided with an opening and aslot therethrough, and a tapertermediate of its length, andatapering screw ing screw adapted to enter the opening and adapted to enter the opening of the plateand slot to cause the sides of the terminal to enthe enlargement of the terminals to force the [5 gage the flanges of the plate. sides of the terminals into engagement with 5 5. A connection for eyeglasses, comprising the inner sides of the rectangular opening.
