Affomey W lT/VESSES:
UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. BAo -ITEL, 0F CANTON, OHIO.
PATENT OFFlCE;
TRoLLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,21 1, dated A-prn a1, 1 90s". I
Application filed March 10,1903.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BACHTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful provide means whereby the trolley will be p're-- vented from accidentally disengaging itself from the wire and will be more effective than the trolleys ordinarily in use and also possess the strength, durability, and effectiveness required in this class of device; and it consists; in
a trolley constructed substantially as shown in the drawingand hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, which represents a perspective view of a trolley embodying my in-' vention,-A- designates a portion of the roofof a car, to which is suitably connected a tubu lar standard B, in which is telescopically or adj ustably secured the trolley-pole (J, the pole being held in its adjustable position by means of set-screws a or other means found most preferable in holding the pole stationary in the tubular standard. The pole Chas a laterally-extending arm b and an arm 0, which carries a suitable roller D, said roller being connected to said arm by a hanger-d of any preferred construction. The arms b and c are connected together by a spring E of any suitable construction, and said spring is secured to the arms in any'desirable manner found best adapted to the purpose, thereby giving the arm 0 a yielding action to adapt it to thetrolley-wire F, and the adj ustability-of the pole 0 enabling it to be lengthened or shortened to adjust it to the height of the trolley-wire. The arm a is substantially parallel with the trolley-wire, and the roller D connected to the end of the arm will be directly over and on line with the pole 0, thereby giving effectiveness to the trolley, insuring the roller to remain in engagement with the trolley-wire when passing around a curve or over a switch, and the arm o being Serial No. 147,062- (No model.)
parallel with the trolley-wire enables the iroller to run on the wire in either direction without changing the position of the trolley. A wire G of suitable thickness and length and of the desired strength and preferably .of copper has a coil f at or near its center,
which coil extends over an upright post e,
projecting from the tubular standard B. ,That portion of the wire above and below I the coiled spring forms arms which are suitably connected to the trolley-pole and the tubular standard, respectively, as shown at g-h. In the present instance I have shown the wire coiled around trolley-pole and standard and afterward brazedor otherwise suitably fastened; but other means may be resorted to in fastening the ends of the wire in place of the coils, as I do not wish to limit myself to any particular means of accomplishing this object, and many changes or modifications may be resorted to without in any manner affecting the essential features of the invention, and any form of standard and any means may be employed for adjust ably connecting the trolley-pole thereto and holding it in its adjusted position without departing from the principle of the inven tion.
A suitable coupling H is provided for connecting the cross-wire I to the wire F, said coupling consisting of the radial arms 1',
which are originally flat and afterward bent "around the wires, as shown.
Any suitable coupling may be employed for connecting together the wires as found bestadapted to the purpose, but that shown is considered the most simple and practical for the purpose intended. The wire G forms a coupling for the trolley-pole and the tubular standard and is preferably of copper and forms a conductor for the electric I current should connection fail between the pole and standard.
Should it be necessary to extend the trolley-pole to an increased length, the coil in the wire G will admit of this extension, the coils being separated in accordance with the raising of the pole and compressed when the pole is lowered.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
ley-pole adj ustably connected thereto, a suit- I 5 able post projecting from the standard, a wire having a plurality of coils engaging the post and the ends of the wire suitably connected to the trolley-pole and standard respectively, ilubstantially as and for the purpose speci- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. BACIITEL.
