CHARLES D. JENNEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
TROLLEY-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,559, dated September 9, 1902.
Application filed December 8,1900. Serial No. 39,215. (No model.)
To ztZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. JENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley Poles, of which the following is a specification.
The objectof my said invention is to produce the device usually denominated a trolley-pole for electric cars, &c., which shall embody in its own structure means whereby it will yield as the relation of the car on which it is mounted to the conductor-wire varies, so as to maintain the contact between the contact devices and the wire continuously instead of providing separate means, as is common.
A pole embodying my said invention will be first fully described and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a streetcar and a fragment of a conductor-wire, said street-car being equipped with a trolley-pole embodying my said invention. Fig.2 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, partly in elevation and partly in section, of that portion of the pole and immediately-adjacent parts which particularly embody said invention; Fig. 3, a top or plan view of the bowllike socket wherein the lower end of the pole is secured, and Fig. 4 a plan view of the clamping-washer whereby the form of spring illustrated as constituting a part of the pole is secured in place in the bowl on top the car.
In said drawingstho portions marked A represent a street or other car, B the ordicured within a bowl-like socket 7 to the deckplank D on top the car. The part 6 is preferably a coiled spring, and the lower end of the part 5 enters into said spring and is there held in any suitable manner, as by a clamping-bolt 4. The spring portion at the other end is held within the bowl-like socket by means of a washer 8 and a bolt 9. Said bowl 7 is formed flaring and rounding, so as to support the spring portion of the pole as it bends in any direction in doing its work. Openings are formed through its bottom, so that no water will be held therein.
As will be readily seen, a pole of this character having a suitable flexible portion will yield in any direction, and the use of heavy complicated yielding supporting devices is wholly avoided, while all necessity for pivotal connections is obviated, as the pole will bend as well in one direction as another, and thus is capable of sidewise as well as front and rear inclinations without being revolved.
Having thus fully described my said invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
1. The combination of an electric car, an overhead conductor, a pole extending from said car to said conductor and embodying in its structure a spring whereby it may yield in any direction, and a bowl like socket formed with outwardly-curved sides Within which the spring-like lower end of said pole may be secured. I
2. The combination of an electric car, an overhead conductor, a pole carried by said car and extending to said conductor, the lower end whereofis in itself a spring, a bowl-like socket having outwardly-curved sides secured to the car into which said spring-like lower end of the pole enters, and a clamp washer and bolt whereby said spring-like lower end of the pole is secured within said socket.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis-Indiana, this 4th day of December, A. D. 1900.
