TOBACCO-PIPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,162, dated April 21, 1903.

Be it known that I, W. G. HASTINGS, a citizen ofthe United States,residing at Sand usk y, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in To bacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to improvements in tobacco-pipes; and the object of the same is to construct a thoroughly sanitary pipe which will be provided with effective means for keeping it clean.

The invention consists of the simple construction and combination of parts hereinafter described in this specification, and more specifically pointed out iin the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, in which Figurel is a longitudinal sectionof my pipe. The stem 2 is provided with an enlarged bore 8 to accommodate the tube 5, which fits into the bore 8 with the opening 6 facing upward and the bore 4 communicat ing with the bowl 1.

A cleaning-wire 9 is mounted within the tube 5 and extends into the mouthpiece 3. The wire 9 has a coil 10 formed on its inner end, and the end is bent to fit within the coil 10 and form a tongue 11, which, in combination with the coil 10, serves to retain a piece 12 of absorbent material, such as cotton tape. The coil 10 is made solarge that it cannot be drawn into the tube 5, but fits in the opening 6 within the bowl. The absorbent'piece 12 is engaged on the tongue ll'and extends back and is coiled around the cleaning-wire 9.

In assembling my device a clean piece 12 of absorbent is engaged on the tongue 11 and coiled around the cleaning-wire 9, which is then inserted coil end first into the stem 2 and bowl 1, after which the tube 5 is engaged on the wire .9 and forced into the stem 2 and placed with the opening 6 facing the bowl 1. When the bowl 1 is filled, the tobacco will come in contact with the coil-1O and absorbent 12, which will serve to preventpacking. The absorbent 12 will also retain all-juice resulting from the combustion of the tobacco, and when saturated may be replaced by a clean piece. By withdrawing the tube 5 and operating the wire 9 by hand the stem may be wiped-clean. In case of an accumulation ofsediment in the bottomof the bowl 1 this maybe removedby simplyrotating the tube 5, when the edges of the blade '7 will cut the sediment loose and enable it to be removed. A modified form of cleaner is shown in Fig.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a'pipe,-the combination with a bowl bearing a hollow stem, of a mouthpiece, a cylindrical=tube connected to said mouthpiece and extending into said stem throughout the length of the same, said tube having its inner end cut away on a diagonal line to form a pointed blade adapted for use in cleaning the stem, substantially as'described.

2. In a pipe, the combination, with a bowl bearing a hollow stem, a cleaning-wire mounted in said stem and bearing a piece of absorbent on its inner end, located just beneath the bowl to absorb the juice of the tobacco, substantially as described.
