Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES DANIEL, OE OARROLLTON, OHIO; J. O. OGLEVEE ADMINISTRATOR OF SAID JAMES DANIEL, DEOEASED.
DIE FOR MAKING ROOFlNG-TILES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,144, dated April 21, 1903.v
Application iiled August ll, 1902. VSerial No.119,360. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES DANIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carrollton, in the county of Carroll, State of Ohio, have invented anfImproVed Die for Making Roofing-Tiles, of' which the following is'a specification.
My invention is a die for the production of clay rooing-tile, the same to be attachedto any machine used for making drain-tile and operated in the same way, producing a tube of clay having eight plain sidesfour sides'of A any desired width for a shingle and the other four sides of such width that when divided in center it will leave a iiange that will keep.-l water from flowing over the side of the shin- ,f gie-,core of'rsaid die to be of such size as to make the inside and outside of Aeach shingle the same width. The core has four cuttingpoints that cut part way through the clay, the points to be adjustable as to depth of cut.
One advantage oi' this die is that when I cut a shingle length I cut four shingles, the same to be dried and burned Vbefore breaking apart.. This prevents warping in 'the'burm Finished shingles are laidv in roofalterf nately ange up and lange down. .n
Said die is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
A represents core of die made of metal.
B B B B represent tubes of clay.
C represents outside portion of die',"also..
What I claim as 'myinvention,` and'desiref to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A die for molding clay roofing-tiles having inclined side flanges, said die comprising an outer member having an opening of polygonal form, with certain of its sides at right angles to each other and its intermediate sides disposed obliquely with reference to the rightangled sides, and an inner member corresponding in exterior form to said opening and of such size as to lie within said opening, but Yout 'of' contactwith the sides thereof, the
spaces between the oblique-angled sides of saidopening and said inner member being narrower thanthose between the right-angled sides thereof, and cutting devices disposed in said oblique-angled narrowed spaces for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. A die for molding clayroong-tiles, having angled side iianges, said die comprising an outer member having an opening of polygonal form with certain of its sides at right angles to each other and its intermediate sides disposed obliquely with reference to the rightangled sides, and an inner member corresponding in exterior form to said opening, lying within and having its sides spaced from those of the opening,` the opposing sides of the opening and theinner member being parallel, and cutting devices projecting into the "spaces between the oblique-angled sides of the said opening and said inner member, substantially as described. A
3. A die for molding clay roofing-tiles, having angled side ianges, said die comprising an outer member having an opening of polygonal form with certain of its sides at right angles to each other and its intermediate sides disposed obliquely with reference to the rightangled sides, and an inner member correspondingin exterior form to said opening, lying Within and having its sides spaced from those of the opening, the opposing sides of the opening and the inner member being par.- allel, and adjustable cutting devices projecting into the spaces between the oblique-angled sides of the said opening and said inner member, substantially asrdescribed. 'A i In testimony whereof I *have* signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.;v Y .I j Y 'JAMESDANIELLA Witnesses:
J. C. OGLEVEE, I-IARRIET OGLEVEE.
