CHRISTIAN F. EOHTERNACH, OF PAINESVILLE, OHIO.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,830, dated April 21, 1903.
Application filed July 3, 1902. Serial No. 114,295. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN F. EOHTER- NAOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Painesville, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in advertising or display signs; and its objectis to provide a device of this character which is 7 simple of construction, inexpensive of production, durablein use, and attractive in appearance.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device which is constructed entirely of metal, and hence practically indestructible, and one which can be read from any direction.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved advertising device, which consists of the tower and revolving signs mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the upper portion of the tower and the revolving signs,
and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 30f Fig. '2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the tower, which is adapted to support the revolving advertising or display signs and which is preferably constructed of the three angle-iron legs 2, which have theirlower ends firmly embedded in the ground to support the same and have their upper ends converging and securely fastened to the head or bearing plate 3. A vertical rod or shaft 4 extends down through the plate 3 and has its lower end secured by the braces 5.
6 denotes a revolving head or bearing plate mounted upon the top of the head-plate 3 and through which the vertical shaft 4 projects. The said plate 6 is formed on its under side with ball-cups or a ball-race 7 to receive the bearing-balls 8, which run upon the top of the plate 3 and afford a ball-bearing connection between the said plates.
Extending vertically from the plate 6 upon opposite sides of the shaft 4 are two rods or standards 9, which converge slightly and are secured together at their upper ends by the cross head 10, through which the shaft 4 passes. The standards 9 are braced and prevented from spreading by the rings 11 encircling the shaft 4 and riveted to said standards at proper intervals.
12 denotes horizontal arms arranged inpairs upon the standards 9 and which are adapted to support the signs 13. The said arms are secured to the standard by having their inner ends bent at right angles and riveted to the said standards. The outer ends of each pair of arms are adapted to receivea bolt 14, carrying the si n 13, which is preferably constructed of a sheet of galvanized sheet metal bent upon itself or doubled and having the bolt 14 passing through the center and securely fastened thereto. The bolts 14 are adapted to turn or rotate so that the signs are thus pivoted at their center. Any desired advertising or display matter may be placed upon the faces of these signs. The upper end of the vertical shaft 4 is provided with a reduced extension 15, upon which is mounted a similar revolving sign 16, which is held upon said extension by the cap-nut 17.
It will be seen that by this construction I produce an advertising-sign which is of neat and attractive design, which is extremely durable, and which will always leave the signs exposed to full view no matter in which direction the revolving head turns.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In. an advertising device, the combination with a tower provided with a bearinghead and a vertical shaft projecting above the same, of a revolving head mounted upon said shaft and bearing-head, and having a ball-bearing connection therewith, vertical standards projecting from said revolving head, a cross-head mounted upon said shaft and securing the upper ends of said Vertical standards, horizontal arms arranged in pairs and having their inner ends bent at an angle and secured to said standards, rotatable bolts in the outer ends of said arms, and signs secured to said bolts, substantially as described.
2. In an advertising device the combination with a tower provided with a bearinghead and a vertical shaft projecting above the same, of a revolving head mounted upon said shaft and provided with cups upon its under side, bearing-balls in said cups affording an antifriction connection between said heads, vertical standards projecting from said revolving head, across-head mounted to rotate upon said shaft and securing the upper ends of the standards together, bracerings surrounding said standards and spacing same apart, horizontal arms arranged in pairs and having their inner ends bent at right angles and bolted to said standards, bolts journaled in the outer ends of each pair of horizontal arms, and signs each formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent upon itself, surrounding said bolts and secured thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
