UNITED TAT-ES men AUGUST WVILLIAM RUDOLPH BEER, OF EUREKA, CALIFORNIA.
BED-COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,821, dated April 21, 1903.
Application filed October 23, 1901. Serial No. 79,623. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST WILLIAM RU- DOLPH BERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, county of Hu inboldt,State of California, have invented an Improvement in Bed-Coverings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of bed-coverings, such as are commonly known as quilts or comforters. Its object is to provide a quilt havingincreased sanitary properties over those ordinarily in use and also to furnish a quilt whose outer covering may be cleaned or replaced at any time without injuring the quilt or in any way disturbinglthe padding.
It consists of the improved bed-covering which I will hereinafter describe and claim.
Figure 1 is a plan of invention, certain portions being removed. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the waddingin a partly-folded position.
'A and A representthe cloths between which the wedding or batting is placed. It is customary to lay this batting of wool, cotton, or
other fiber on in a broad sheet and then stitch or tack the cloths or covering thereto. The result is, first, the batting soon forms into a solid mat, and, second, the covering being a part of the filling cannot be cleaned without pulling the comforter in pieces or otherwise nearly destroying the comforter trying to wash it. In my invention this filling material consists of strands or drawings 2, of wool, cotton, or other suitable fiber. These strands are laid between the cloths AA forming the cover in diagonal form, as in Fig. l. The strands are arranged in two layers, with the strands in each layer running diagonally, but the direction of the strands being difierent in the two layers.
There is this notable difierence over the old method of laying the batting in a single sheet. In my invention these strands cross each other in such a manner that they do not interlock or become matted together. The result width is thus furnished, having a transverse interstice between each two strands. By
folding the sheet then upon itself the two layers, as shown in Fig. 3, are formed, in which the strands run diagonally, but in opposite directions, in'the two layers.
The covering A A is of any suitable, cheap, and light material, for it is intended to inclose this in the outer or service cover B. As this outer covering is independent of the in- .ner covering and may have any desired ornamental figuration thereon, it is possible to remove it at any time for cleaning or to permit of a new covering being put on and without injury to or disturbing the batting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture a quilt consisting of corded strands offibrous material coiled continuously in diagonal lines and folded upon itself to form superposed rowsand with the strands of one row crossing the strands of the other row transversely, and a fibrous cover inclosing the mass of coiled material and held thereto by lines of stitching which also hold the coils together and prevent slipping and bunching.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
AUGUST WILLIAM RUDOLPH BEER.
