PAWL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,682, dated April 21, 1903. Application filed September 1'7, 1902. Serial No. 123,723. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISSACHAR W. Dons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newmarket, county of Rockingham, State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Pawls, of which the following descrip-' tion, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel pawl adapted to coact with I a ratchet-wheel and control the movement thereof. My novel pawl is of especial advantage in connection with looms, as by it greater accuracy may be obtained in Weaving, and
its use is particularly valuable in connection with the take-up and let-oif of looms in in-- Figure 1 shows a sufficient portion of a loom with a take-up ratchet-wheel and one of my pawls in coacting relation therewith. Fig. 2 shows the pawl enlarged, detached, and broken out at one end. Fig. 3 shows an under-side view of the acting end of the pawl, and Fig. 4: shows separately theplate and the bolt used to attach it tothe pawl-body.

The pawl-carrying lever D may be moved in any usual manner andbe of any usual shape, the said lever as herein represented being actuated from a link G, connected with the lay, the latter being movable about the lay rock-shaft H.
The pawl-body may be of any usual or suitable shape.
The pawl herein shown is provided at its side nearest the ratchet-wheel with a fiat face a, with a hole 17, and with a notch o, the latter being at the outer side of the pawl-body, 'as best shown in Fig. 2. The flat face a in accordance with my invention acts to support the back 2 of the plate (1, having a plurality of acting edges 3 4. 5 6, either one of which may be exposed at the extremity of the pawl and engage a ratchet-tooth. That edge of the plate opposite the one in engagement with the pawl contacts with the shoulder e at one edge of the flat surface a. That either edge of the plate d may be readily brought into operative position at the acting end of the pawlbody I have provided the plate with a central hole 7, and the portion of said hole at the outer side of the plate, or the side nearest the ratchet-wheel, is countersunk to leave a space 8 for the reception of the head 9 of a screw 10, the shank of which, projecting from the hole 7, enters the hole b of the pawl-body and has applied to it a-nut 12, said nut entering the notch c in the outer face of the pawlbody. By embedding the head of the bolt in the face of the plate the bolt is prevented from contacting with the ratchet-teeth, and
owing to the bolt being located at the center of the plate the plate when the nut is unscrewed sufficiently to enable the bolt to be withdrawn permits the plate to be moved for a quarter-turn to bring an unused edge in operative position.
A pawl having a plate provided with a plurality of acting edges will last very much longer than a pawl having but one edge, and by using a plate of steel of the class described it is possible to get metals of different hardness coacting together, which always results in greater durability.
Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pawl-body having a flat face and a notch on its free end, a detachable contactplate provided with a plurality of working edges seated upon the fiat face of the pawlbody, and a bolt passing centrally through the contact-plate and the endof the pawlbody, and a not on said bolt seated in the notch in the outer end of the pawl-body.
