Be it known that I, .0. W. Screw, ot' Plantsville, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticuahave invented a. new and improved Machine for Folding Tinned Plates;v andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will Venable those skilled in the art to make and -use the same, reference beinghadvto the accompanying plate of drawings, forming part ofvthis specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my invention.

A represents a base-plate, having upright bars D attached, two near each end,' and connected at their top ends by cross-plates a. These upright bars B serve as guides for bearings C, which are allowed'to work freely t up anddown between them, and in thesebearings the journals 6 of'a folding-bar, D, are fitted and work. 'lhisl folding-bar is constructed with two plane. surfaces or sides c c', which are at right angles withv each lother, as "shown clearly in iig. G, and on each journal, b, of the folding-bar, at the outer sides of the vbearings C, there is secured a cam, E, shown-in igs.1,' 2, and 4.." Ff represents a. bed, the same being attached to a bar, G, provided lwith a journal, d, at each end, fitted in fixed bearing-s e, on the base-'plate A. This admits of a certain degree of vertical play of the bed F, the same being allowed to rise and fall to a certain extent, to admit of the tinGX to be bent or folded, being inserted between the bed F and a fixed bearing-surface, H, as shown in iig. 6. The bed F has an arm, AI, attachedto it, at one or both ends, said arm or arms extending forward .underneath the folding-har D, near its ends, on which camsvJ are formed. One cam, J, and one arm, I, are only shown in the drawings. Through the rear upright bar B, adjoining the arm I, a horizontal sliding pin, K, is itted,-a nd allowed to' work freely. This pinhas a spiral spring, f,'upon it, which has a. tendency to keep the pin suiliciently far within the bar B, in which it is fitted, so that it will not interfere with the movement of the' arm I; and the Vcam E, adjoining thc pin K, has a groove, g, made in it, to allow the springfto keep the pin K free from the arm I, (see iig. L is a slide placed longitudinally on the base-plate A, and provided at its rear side with two inclined surfaces, h L, shown more particularly in iig. 7, and the-bearings C C extend down and catch or hook under these. inclined surfaces, as shown in fig. 8, so that, by moving the slide L longitudinally, the bearings C C, and, consequently, the folding-bar D, admit of being raised under the action of the cams E, the latter bearing upon inclined surfaces z'z', on'the upper surfaces of the -slide L. i
The operation is as follows: In case it is desiredfto fold a piece of tinned plate with a -closeor tight fold, the slide L is adjusted to the left, as shown in figs. I, 5, and 7, which causes the bearings to be brought downto their fullest extent between the bars B B, and, by turning the folding-bar D, so that its plane surface or side elwill be down in a horizontal plane, in front ofthe bed F, the sheet of tinned plate may be inserted between' the bed F and the fixed bearing H, and over the surface or side c of the .folding-bar, and, by turning the barD'f over in the direction indicated byzarrow 1, in iig.. 6, the sheet of metalAvill be bent or folded with a close joint; but, by shoving the slide L to theiright, so thatv the inclined surfaces 7L maybe free from the lower hooked ends ot the bearingsC, thecams E will, as the bar is turned, raisethe bar D, and cause the metal plate to be folded with an open joint, so that tnlay receive a wire. This open joint is shown formed in 6g. 6. In turning the bar D to form the jointin the plateGX, it is necessary, after the end of the plate has been inserted between the bed F and the bearing G, to have the front edge ofthe bed F press npon the plate GX, to hold it firm; and this is effected by the cam or cams J, which act upon the arm or arms I, andforce clown thefront end of the bed F. And, previous to said cam or' cams leaving the arm or arms, the pin -K is forced out by the cam E, adjoining it, over the arm I', underneath it, and the bed F is kept down by said pin, after tbe'cam or` cams have left the arm orarms. l Y
'Having'thus described myinvention, what I'clam as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

2.' The 'cams J' E, pin K,and folding-bar D, in combination with the. arms I, slide L, bed F, and xed bearing H, all operating as described, whereby the metal plate GX is held securely in position while being folded, substantially as described, for` the purpose specified.
