Letters Patent No. 72,669, dated December 24, 1867.
IMPROVED MAGHINE FOR BENDING METALS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN NOLAND, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvaniafhave invented a Machine for Bending kStrips or Bars of Metal; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of mechanism, fully described hereafter, for imparting to bars or strips of metal curves the reverse of, but meeting each other, or, as such curves are sometimes termed, S-bends.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specication, and in whichl Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved machine for bending bars or strips of metal.

A is a metal block or former, which consists of two parts or sections, a a', the former being secured to a table or other stationary object, and the latter being detachable from the section a for a purpose described hereafter. The edge of the forming-block is partly curved and partly straight, as shown in the drawing, the curves corresponding to circles, the centres of three of which are at points d di e, in the block A, while the centre of another coincides with a point, d, in an arm, H, secured to the section a. To the block A are hung tivo levers, B C, which turn on pins inserted at the` points Z d1 in the block, and to the arm H is hung a lever, F, which vibrates on a pin inserted at the point d'2 in the said arm. Ou a rod secured to a slide,f, at the end of the lever C, turnsra roller t, the edge of which is grooved to correspond to the adjacent curved edge of the rib e, as shown in tig. 3, and through slots iu the slidef, and in the vlever C, pass a key, n, and a wedge, m, by which the slide and its roller may be adjusted at .any required distance from the rib c. At the end of the lever F turns a grooved roller, k, and to the lever B is secured1 an adjustable slide or block, 8, the inner side of which is curved to correspond to the curved side of the'irib c. The levers, C, 13 and F, are brought to the position shown in iig. 2, and a metal strip, X, which is curved transversely to lit the rib c,is passed between the latter and the roller L, and slide s, as showlrin iig; 2. The lever Bis new turned in the direction of its arrow tothe position shown in iig. 1, the slide s (the curved lower end of which bears against the strip bending the strip round. the adjacent curved edge of the forming-block, and maintaining it in close contact with the rib c, the shoulders, it', preventingthe strip from moving laterallyl gom vits position. The levers C and F are newA turned in the direction of their arrows to the position shown `1n tig. 1, the rollers Vt c, as they thus traverse in a curved path adjacent to and corresponding with the curved portions of the edge of the forming-block, forcing the strip against the latter, and thus bending it toa form corresponding with that ofthe said edge. The lever F is new turned to the position shown in iig. 2, and the roller h and slide .9 are adjusted'so as to permit the strip to be detached from the forming-block. It may then be soldered to another strip of a corresponding shape, to form a bent tube, or may be applied to any other purpose. If desired, the lever B may be'renioved from the position described, and may be adjusted so as to turn on a fulerum at the point e, when the strip is to be bent round the curved edge of the former adjacent' to this point. `When the strips are to be bent to a diiferent form from that described, the section a ot' the former may be detached, and another of a different shape may b'e adjusted in its place, as shown in tig. 4. In this case the fulcra of the levers should coincide with the centres of circles, of which the curves inthe new section form parts. Either grooved rollers, or stationary blocks simi.i lar to the slide s, may be used for forcing the strip against the edge of the former, while the said edge may be either iiat or recessed, to receive metal bars or tubes.
I wish it to be understood that I do not claim broadly'the bending of metal 'bars or strips over the edge of a former, by means of a lever hung to the said former, and carrying a roller for bearing against the said bar or strip, this having been heretofore done, but that my invention relates to mechanism for impartingto a bar or striptwo curves, the reverse of, but meeting each other; inotlier words, imparting an S-bend to the strip.
I therefore claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The former A, on the edge of which are two curves, the reverse of, but meeting euch other, in combination with the levers C und F, carrying rollers or their equivalents,4 and so hung that'the said rollers con be moved', that of one lever in the arc of a. circle concentric with that of one curve, and the other in the arc of a circle eoncentric with that ofthe other curve on the edge of the frame, all as set forth, for the purpose specified;v
