TO ALL WHOM IT MAY-CONCERN Beit'know'n that we, HARVEY D. PALMER and JAMES H. BEARD, of Leonidas, in the county of St. Joseph, in the State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Method of Winter Land-Conveyance, which may be called a Wheeled Sleigh, or an Adjustable Winter-Vehicle; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of i reference marked thereon. t V Y The nature of our invention consists in attaching to the lower braces which. are united with 'thc frameworkand runners of an ordinary sleigh, a set of wheels, (four,) with arms and levers, so connected that the driver,
whenever he approaches aplace bare ofsnow, wit hout gettin-g from his seat, by moving va lever, which is conveniently'situated for that purpose, may causothe wheels, (placed inside of and" near the runners,) through their connecting-apparatus, to be thrown at once belowthe-runners of the. sleigh, ready forfrotution.

aforesaid, which is the actuating-lever, byfwliieh (the proper motion being given) the wheeled apparatus, as will be hereafter described, isthrown into and out of operation. I
To the frame of an ordinarilyconstructed sleigh, A.A A A A A A, and runners B, B, are secured braces C C C C. These braces (two 'to'each runner) are slotted, as shown at a so as to receive the ends of the bifurcated arms E E E which ends serve as axles (see c e) upon which the wheels D D D D are rotated inside the runners B B. The armsFE EE E, at b b,-'are pivoted to lovers F F, which are suspended from hangers c c, secured to the frame of tho sleigh. The ends of the levers are slotted at cl (2, so as toplay freely between the jaws of the slotted piece G; the upper end of .which is fastened to the actuating-lever K. The' actuating-lever K being bifurcated at its base, has each of its forks secured in bearings, 'I, (see figs. land-2,) which seats or bearings form a part of the pieces H H,'figs. 1 and 3, which are fastened tothe transverse frame-. work of the sleigh. In fig. 1, the lever K is shown in dotted lines 'in'its normal position, or when the vehicle is designed to be used for travelling on the snow. In fig. 2 its vertical position shows the same adaptation, while the oblique position, in dotted lines, shows it as actuated for the purpose of thro wingthe wheels D D D D below the runners B B, for bare groundl p i The driver, the lever K being in its vertical position, and wishing to throw the wheels into-gearfor below the lower surface of the runners, simply throws the lever Kiforward, and either holds it with his foot, for a short passage upon wheels, (according to the condition ofthe road,) or may secure it in any ordinary manner to the inside of the front part of the sleigh-box. The lever K, attached .to the piece I, upon being thrown for-- ward, (from the drirer',) brings the levers'F F, at the slotted ends, upward, and at the opposite.ends, wherejoined to the armsE E E E, downward, thus throwing the wheelsiDDD D, attached to the arms, below the lower portion of the runners, ready for rotation. When it is desired to go on runners, the lever K is brought back to its vertical position, thus reversing the position of the levers F F, and causing the wheels to be thrown upwards 1 v. z i i It will thus be seen thatby a simple and economical apparatus, we have secured to vthe traveller acute-and independent means of winter land or ice-conveyance, calculated for distant journeys, or a method of passing overfbridges or ground when bare of snow, so desirable for transportation of produce of the farm, or productions of the mines or forests.
