Description
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.-
GUIDO BLENIO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROCESS OF'RENDERING FABRICS FIREPROOF.
'SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '7 24,7 88, dated April 7, 1903.
Application filed July 29, 1902. Serial No. 117.544. (Specimena) T0 aZZ whom, it may concern Beit known that I, GUIDO BLENIO, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Rendering Fabrics Fireproof, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved process for treating heavy fabrics used for any purpose so as to render the same fireproof; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the process for the purpose specified hereinafter described and claimed.
In the practice of my'invention I provide a solution of alum, phosphate of ammonia, and water, said parts being compounded in the following proportions: alum, one-fourth pound; phosphate of ammonia, one pound; water, one gallon.
In carrying my invention into efiect I first form a solution of the alum and water by dissolving the alum in warm water, the water being thoroughly stirred until the alum is fully dissolved. The phosphate of ammonia is then dissolved in water in the same manner, and the two solutions thus formed aremixed and thoroughly stirred until a complete solu tion is formed consisting of the alum, phosphate of ammonia, and water. The fabric to be treated is then soaked in this solution, and after it has remained therein a sufficient length of time in order that it may be thoroughly saturated with the solution it is removed therefrom and passed through a wringer or otherwise wrung, so as to remove therefrom the surplus solution, after which it is dried and again soaked in a solution of liquid glass, and after it has remained therein until it is thoroughly saturated it is removed therefrom and dried, after which it is ready for use. Fabrics treated in this manner will be fireproof under all conditionsand cannot be ignited and will only char when subjected to a very high degree of heat. 3
My improved fireproofing process is particularly designed for rendering heavy fabbrics, such as canvas, when used for any purpose fireproof; also for rendering theatercurtains, house-curtains, portieres, and other articles of this class fireproof, together with all kinds of wall hangings, draperies, and upholstery material, and said process is simple in application and comparatively inexpensive and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A process for rendering fabrics fireproof, which consists in adding alum and ammonium phosphate to a suitable quantity of water, soaking the fabric therein, drying the same and then soaking it in a solution of liquid glass, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 20th day of June, 1902.
GUIDO BLENIO.
