-O. E. WEATHERHEAD, OF WINCHEN DON, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No'. 72,433, elated December 17, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIVIDBRS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 1 Y' I' Be it known that I, O. E. WEATHERHEAD, of Winchendon, Worcester county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dividers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the drawings- Figure 1 represents a' pair of dividers with my improvement.
Figures 2 and 3 being detailed viewsof parts'of the same. i
This invention consists in a pair of dividers, more particularly ofthe kind used by carpenters andjoiners, in which one of the legs is arranged so that an ordinary lead-pencilv may be inserted and adjusted for use, with readiness, my improvement being comprehended in the construction of the leg for this purpose.
In construction, I form the dividers of one leg, A, formed as usual, and thet other leg, B, as follows: At a suitable distance from the hinge the leg B is formed, with an elbow, C, projecting 'at or near 'a right angle from the leg B outwards. This elbow, C, is' made suiciently'wide to admit of a hole being made through it at a, for the pencil D to come through. From the outer end oi' this elbow again extends downwards apiece, E, having` a clamp, F, upon it, which is arranged with a set-screw, b, so that the clamp may tighten the pencil against the piece E, and hold it firmly in place whenever adjusted. The piece E is formed witha groove, c, along its whole length on the inner` side, which, conforming in shape to the surface ofthe pencil, allows the latter to tit snugly against it. An end view of the clamp F is shownl in fig. 3, where it is seen that it consists of a collar, fitting squarely upon the piece E, and continuing the circleof the groove in the piece E, so that it closes closely up on the pencil when clamped. This clamp can be moved up or down the piece E at pleasure, and tightened by the set-screw Zz. In g. 2 is shown an iron or steel point, G, in -place of the pencil. A pen for ruling may also be changed in place of either pencil or plain point, if convenient, or to suit occasions. l
The advantages of my improvement are in the increased facility by which an ordinary lead-pencil may be I adapted to the dividers, and in the secure method of holding the same in place, and adjusting it at pleasure.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Pa.tent,'is- The device for holding a pencil point, or pen, upon the dividers, consisting of the elbow C, piece E, with groove c, and clamp F, with set-screw b, arranged and combined substantially as described.
0. E. WEATHERHEAD.
