INIPROVENIFNT IN TAKING THE FORM AND MASURE DI' GENTLEMEN T0 GUT GOATS AND VESTS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: .A

Be it known that I, THEODORE'VANDOREN, Sr., of Washington, in the county of Washington, and in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Taking' the Form and Measure of Gentlemen to Cut Coats and Vests; and I do hereby-declare thatA the following is a full, clear, and exact` description thereof', reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of vthisspecification.

My mode of taking the measure foi` cutting gentlemens coats orV vest-s is, by preparing a numherotsmall coats or jackets of the different sizes, as' seen at A Al A2, with thev seams of the jackets sewed with the raw edges out at the back and hip-seams.v T correspond with each jacket so made, I have patterns, a c cl, cut the exact size of the jackets. When a gentleman desires a coat cut, I place a jacket upon him shout the size I think will fit him, always having the same, if anything'y a little larger than the` person to be fitted. I then take up the loose seams on 'the jacket, enough for the same to fit neatly around his hody, and pin them at the point desired. The jacket is then taken of, and the pattern to correspond with thejacket is brought, and the difference between the'gatheredjacket and pattern measured and deducted (if anyyfrom lthe pattern, and thegarm'ent is cut therefrom. It will be seen that a vest can as readily be measured as a coat,

By the mode herein described a measure can be taken in a very short space of time, and a person fitted to lmore of a certainty than by' the tape-measure. This method requires no figures to be placed upon the book, Aobviating the mistakes that nowoftentimes occur. Thejackets can he made of any material desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what Icluim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' The use of series of jackets, with the seams thereot` formed as herein described, in combination with the patterns, to correspond with said jaekets,'when said jackets and patterns are used together inthe manner described, as a system for cutting gentlemens coats and veste, herein fully set forth.
