To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ZEBULON LINCOLN CHADBOURNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Finger Mechanism for Looms, of which the following is a specification. Y Y
My invention relates to a finger mechanism for engaging the weft-threads on a loom for open-meshed fabrics such as is covered by my application Serial No. 59,118 and raising these weft-threads up into position to be caught by the pins on the pin-roller to form crosses with the said warp-threads. Y
The novel construction employed is fully described in this specication and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the front portion of a loom with parts broken away and with my device secured thereto'. Fig.f'2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is afragmentary detail of one of the rock-shafts. y
Like numerals of reference designate 'like parts in the dierent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates the sideframe of my loom, and 2 the main driving-shaft. A double series of horizontal pins 3 are mounted in rails 4, extending. transversely the machine. Aset of shuttles 5 are mounted on the pins 3-and each carries one end of a weft-thread A, which pass up and over a piu-roller 6, mounted to be revolved and to be reciprocated endwise. 'A tension-bar 7 is mounted parallel to the pin-roller 6 and inl combination therewith supports warp-threads B. The tension-bar 7 is mounted to be reciprocated longitudinally in unison with the pinroller, and the warp thereby moved bodily in its own plane a distance of two threads of the warp at each movement. After each movement of the Warp the shuttles 5 are passed therethrough and cross the weft and warp threads. After each movement of the warp thepin-roller is turned to engage the weft-threads and form crosses.
All of the above description applies to my loom and is no part of my present invention. In using the loom constructed as above set forth I found that the crosses of the threads did not come within reach of the pin-roller,
and some'mechanism was necessary to beat the crosses back-that is, raise them up into vposition to be engaged by the pin-roller.
`the crosses it would be necessary to wind up the whole length intervening between the pin-roller 6 and the shuttles after each shift of the pin-roller and tension-bar. This is avoided bythe finger mechanism. This mechanism forms the subject-matter of the pres- .ent application.
Rigidly secured to the frames 1 in front of the pin-rollers 6 are apertured arms 9, within which is journaled a rock-shaft 10, bearinga crank-arm 11. YMounted. in the rock-shaft 10 is a 'series of parallel iingers 12 for engaging the weft-threads when in their forward position, (shown by dotted lines marked A,) each of the lingers 12 consisting of two parallel Vmembers having their ends turned out at 12.
A connecting-rod 13 is pivoted at its upper end to the crank-pin lla and at its lower to the long slotted arm of a lever 14, fulcrumed on a stud seated in the frame. The short arm of thelever 14is slotted and pivoted to the upper end of a pusher-rod 15,'mounted in a guide 16, formed on anarm 15, secured to the frame 1. This pusher-rod 15 is provided with a roller'l, journaled in its lower end and located to be engaged by two arms 17L of a four-'armed cam 17, keyed on the main Ishaft 2.
Located just back of the pin-roller 6 is a mechanism similar to the one just 4described and comprising a rock-shaft 18, bearing fingers 19, which rock-shaft is provided with a crankarm- 20, connected to the long arm of a lever 21 by means of a rod 22. The short arm of -the lever 21 is pivoted to a pusher-rod 22,
This pusher-rod 22a has a roller 23 journaled therein, which is in position to be engaged by two arms 17b of the four-armedcam 17. -The arms 17a and 17b alternate, so that the pushers 22 and 15 are operated alternately. Springs 24 are connected tothe frame' 1 and to the long arms of the levers to restore them IOO to their initial position after each displacement.
The operation of my device can now be sketched. When the shaft 2 revolves, the arms 17 and 17b alternately operate the 1evers 14 and 21 to operate the rock-shafts 10.
and 18 to raise the fingers l2 and 19. The cam is set so that the fingers 12 will be raised to engage the weft-threads to throw the portion intervening between the shuttles and `fin gers parallel to the warp-threads as viewed from the front and throw'the remaining part of the weft intervening between the fingers and the pin-roller 6 into a position transverse to the Warp. When the fingers 12 have reached the uppermost position, this latter intervening length is very short and is picked up by the next partial revolution of the pinroller 6. The fingers 19 are raised to engage the weft when the shuttles are in their rear position. By this means the action of my loom is made more positive than before.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a pinroller mounted to be revolved and to move longitudinally, a tension-bar, said roller and said tensionbar being constructed to carry a series of warp-threads and one of the ends of a series of weft-threads which are arranged on said pin-roller alternately with said warp-threads, shuttles carrying the other ends of said weftthreads, means for passing said shuttles through the plane of said warp, means for moving said pin-rollerand said tension-bar longitudinally after eachmovement of said shuttles to throw said weftthreads outof parallel with said Warp-threads, fingers mounted to engage said weft-threads, and means for operating said ingers to engage said wef tthreads to bring them parallel with said warpthreads after each longitudinal movement of said pin-roller and tension-bar, substantially as described.
2. The combination with meansfor holding the lay of the warp and one end of the lay of the weft, shuttles carrying the other end of the weft, means for intermittently moving said shuttles, means for moving the warp transversely, fingers each formed ofi' two parallel members and located to engage the weft, and means foroperating said fingers, substantially as described. l
