U ITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES STOLLBERG, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF, NEW
JERSEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,940, dated March 31, 1903. Application filed September 4, 1902. Serial No. 122,045. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES STOLLBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in sheet-metal cabinets for holding and delivering cartons, boxes, cans, or packages.
The object of my invention is to provide a cabinet of a simple, efficient, and durable construction, of a neat appearance, and capable of being finely decorated, which will be attractive and ornamental and which will serve for conveniently holding, handling, or delivering'cartons, boxes, cans, or packages.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and 'in the novel combinations of parts and devices here in shown or described and by which this object or result is accomplished.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sheet-metal carton-cabinet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 3 is a partial horizontal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.- Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail horizontal "section showing the construction of the partitions.
In said drawings, A represents the non-r0 tating base of the cabinet, the same being made, preferably, from a single piece of sheet metal stamped up into inverted-dish shape and having a horizontal flange a.
B is the rotating base of the cabinet, the same being preferably of wood and connected to the non-rotating base A by a pivot or bolt 19, so that the cabinet may be turned into any position desired on its non-rotating base.
B is the bottom plate of the cabinet, the same beingof sheet metal and having a curved flange b and a straight or upright flange b the latter embracing and covering the edges of the wood rotating base B.
- D is the'vertical longitudinal center plate of the cabinet, which separates the two series of upright compartments 0 C from each other and which is provided at its ends with rightumn-plates G.
metal vertical end' plates D D of the cabinet, the same being preferably soldered thereto. The longitudinal center plate D also has a flange d at its lower edge for firmly securing it, preferably by solder, to the sheet-metal bottom plate B.
The vertical end plates D D of the cabinet are each provided at each edge with cylindrical rolls d forming upright columns, preferably about a half-inch in diameter, at the four corners of the cabinet, which serve to give strength and rigidity to the cabinet as a wihole and to the sheetmetal end plates and also a neat and ornamental appearance.
' The partitions F between the vertical or upright compartments C C and C C are preferably hollow or double, consisting each,
preferably, of two partition-plates ff, each having flanges f at its upright edges for uniting the same to each other and to the longitudinal center plate D and the partition col- The partition column-plates G each has a pair of cylindrical rolls or columns g'g, and being securely fixed or soldered; to the hollow or double partitions F serve to give great firmness, strength, and rigidity to the partitions and to the cabi netstructure as a whole. The rolls or columnsg g are preferably cylindrical or sub;
stantially cylindrical in form, and in connection with the corresponding rolls or columns (1 on the end plates D form vertical guides' from itscompartment while the cartons, boxes, or packages above the lowermost one are held in place by the columns or guides g g C1 The horizontal depth of the notches F should be sufficient to give room for the finger and thumb to grasp the front end of the carton, box,- can, or package X in the compartment. As the partitions F are double or hollow, the stacks or piles of cartons or packages in the compartments are thus sufficiently separated from each other to enable the lowermost carton or package to be grasped by the finger and thumb, although the adjacent compartments on either side may be filled with cartons or packages. This hollow, double, or thick construction of the cross-partitions F thus renders it unnecessary to provide the cabinet with any device for pulling or pushing the lowermost carton out or partially out of its compartment, and thus materially simplifies the construction of the cabinet, while at the same time adding to its neatness of appearance and preserving its full efficiency and convenience of operation.
H is the top of the cabinet, the same being preferably of sheet metal and surrounding and embracing the end plates D and the roll or column plates G, to all of which-the top piece is preferably secured by solder. The top piece H has a roll it at its lower edge to strengthen and stiffen the same and give an ornamental finish and appearance to itself and to the cabinet as a whole and an outwardly-flaring part it, which terminates in an upright flange 79, having a downward fold 71 at its upper edge, all of which also serves to stiffen and strengthen the top piece and give rigidity and firmness to the cabinet as a whole, while also producing a neat and ornamental appearance. The top piece H is also provided at the lower edge of the upright flange 71 with shelves or shoulders 7%, preferably formed of bent pieces of sheet metal and soldered to the top piece to receive and support the lid K of the cabinet, the shelves orshoulders being preferably located at the corners ofthe top piece and also,if desi red, alongits longitudinal sides. The lid K rests on the shoulders it within the flange 7L2 of the top piece and is provided with downturned flanges K at its marginal edges, which serve to stiffen the same, and also with an upright longitudinal plate K which serves as a handle for lifting the lid and also to give an ornamental finish to the cabinet and serve as a sign-plate for the name of the party producing or dealing in goods contained in the cabinet.
As my improved cabinet is or may be made as to all its exterior portions and longitudinal and cross-partitions of sheet metal and preferably of tin-plate, it is adapted to receive a fine decoration like other decorative tinware and is at the same time very durable and easily kept in repair and in a perfectly clean and neat appearance. As my cabinet is rotatable upon a non -rotatable base, it may be readily turned into any position on a counter or other stand, where it may be placed as may be desired or required from time to time for delivering or exposing to view the cartons or packages in any of the compartments on either of the two fronts of the cabinet. As my cabinet contains two sets or series of vertical compartments arranged back to back, the cabinet having a double rotatable base A, a rotatable base-piece B, a I
