'UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
FRANfJIS A. BELL, OF BARDUE, WEST VIRGINIA.
DEVICE FOR SIDE-DRESSING SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,810, dated March 81 1903.
Application filed July 5,1902. Serial No. 114,423. (No modeli) f0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bardue, in the county of Jefferson and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Side- Dressing Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw-sharpening devices, and particularly to that class known as saw-files, this invention being designed for sid e-filing the outer surfaces of the teeth in order that the set of the outer surfaces may be uniform in order to produce a smooth out from ridges or marks of the teeth.
The object of the invention is to produce a device of the character noted which is readily applied by the operator and which may be held in place by the operator during the manipulation of the file. Furthermore, the 0bjeet of the invention is to produce means for adjusting the position of the file with relation to the saw and for insuring a uniform action on all of the teeth.
A further objectof the invention is to produce a file-carryingblock having a handle with means for limiting inward movement of theblock and the depth of the cut of the file.
Finally, the object of the invention is to produce a side file which will prove simple in construction, efficient and satisfactory in use,
and comparatively inexpensive to produce and sustain.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangementand combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invent-ion in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in both views, and in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view representing the invention applied to a saw. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view representing the invention in section.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the base or body of the device, having a series of adjustable gage-posts 2, which posts are provided with scales in order that they may be set to the same relative position without the exercise of undue care. I prefer'to employa jam nut 3 to secure the posts at varying degrees of'adjustment, though in practice this may 'be dispensed with. The body is provided near its end beyond the posts with a dovetail groove 4 for the reciprocating block, said block having a seat 5 for the reception of a file-blade 6, which file-blade is of greater thickness than the depth of the seat in order that said blade will project beyond the surface of the block. The body is provided with a slot 7, which intersects with the dovetail groove approximately centrally the width of the groove, said slot terminating a suitable distance from each side of the body. A shank 8 is formed with or attached to the block and is slidable in the slot of the body. Ahandle 9 is formed with or attached to a shank, and the shank is of a greater length than the thickness of the body from the recess to the outer surface. ders 10 at its junction with the shank, and thus a certain amount of space is left between the shoulders and'the outer surface of the body.
In operation the posts are seated against the side of the saw, and the block is reciprocated by the handle, so that the tooth acted upon is cut away until the shoulders of the handle contact with the outer surface of the body. When each tooth has been acted upon in a manner stated, it will follow that they will have a set which will result-in a smooth out. The relation of the block tothe dovetail groove is such as to permit a limited movement in order that the block may approach the saw until the shoulders of the handle engage the body. The posts of the base are held against the saw by the hand of the operator or in any other manner desired.
The construction, operation, and advan-- tages, it isthought, will be understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that various changes may be made in the propor tions and details of construction without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. 1. In a device of the character described,
a base having a dovetail groove and a slot,
posts adjustable in the base, a block having The handle is made to formshoub a handle with its shank slidable in the slot, I carried by the block substantially-as diea file carried by the block as and for the I scribed. purpose specified. and a slot extending transversely the base, posts adjustable in the base, a block recipro- FRANCIS BELT" eating in the groove, a handle having a shank Witnesses: slidable in the slot and means for limiting FRANK E. RAPP, 10 the inward movement of the handle and a file HOWARD R. MOORE.
